A new layer?
« on: January 28, 2018, 12:00:15 PM »

I'm not sure if any of our map makers are still around but I have a question and hope someone may be able to answer it.

I have worked on maps before but never made one from scratch so to speak. I was looking at the Veit Nam map and wondered if a new layer for water, such as we have map_c, map_f and so on, could a new layer " map_ " be made to have muddy looking rivers but blue oceans?

I doubt it but things have come a long way so I'm hopeful.

Still around!

My guess is that the processing of map_c, map_f, etc... is in the core executable/dll's of IL-2 and that this is not something that can be "modded" until the whole code is available (if it is one day).

Going from my experiences with FG, the water colors are made with a base texture with perelin noise generated "bump mapping" for the surface.  Would it be possible to open the Water.tga in some image editor and change the base color to muddy brown?  Problem being the ocean will also be muddy brown, but you get that for a couple hundred miles in the Mekong delta and mouth anyways.  you may have to find some way to isolate the new color to just rivers and such.

Yes, we can change the water color. I was wondering about having blue oceans with brown or green rivers by creating a new map_ layer.
