Map catalog?
« on: February 03, 2018, 10:04:58 AM »

In the hope of reaching more members than those who tend to view the Maps category, I'm going to kite this here, and hope for the best:

I'm thinking of producing what-if missions for the pre-war or TGA periods. Has anyone ever assembled a comprehensive catalog, complete with JPGs or whatever, of the maps available in BAT? Call me lazy, but I'm hoping there's some sort of ready reference I can use to avoid having to page through the options, one-by-one, in the FMB.

BTW: At the risk of giving too much away, the projected missions involve pre-emptive attacks on Germany by France and/or Poland in the period 1932-1939. IOW, don't need to review maps of anything but Europe between France and Poland/Czechoslovakia, etc.

If someone made newer map catalog and/or with description ..... also I need it !

Thank you western and Blaubaer. Both of these sources are very useful, and the link provided by Blaubaer leads to an interesting world-view as well. Fortunately, for the type of scenario I have in mind, the number of relevant maps now available in BAT is fairly limited. A complete, visual catalog of all of the maps currently in BAT (3.3) would be nice to have, but assembling such a catalog would be a huge, very time-consuming job. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Quite sad that this topic  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,27841.0.html was Photobucketized. It probably had enough (visual info) for you.

Thanks, Zoran. That decision by photobucket does stink; I had years of screenshots stored there, for display here at SAS and at M4T. The thread at the other end of your link still has some interesting images of Spain and North Africa, though.

Went through the BAT 3.3 map index last night and found 8 or 9 maps, with portions of Germany, which could be used for the types of missions I have in mind. Now to start planning spawning and take-off times, etc.  8)

You are welcome.
I should look forward to your missions. If flying for the red side, I am in!
The pre-emptive strikes idea is quite interesting. Maybe Czechoslovakian or Swiss strikes as well? Belgian, Dutch?
I found TGA flying very relaxing (compared to trying to escape from a fw-190 in a dead slow La-5...).

By the way... Is there any tool allowing to generate maps images or the only way is to make screenshots from FMB?

Good question, Dimlee. It's possible to get screenshots in the FMB, but sometimes the map has to be scrolled one way or another in order to get grabs of the whole thing and, depending upon the size of the map, it can be difficult to discern exact locations of airfields. I'm guessing that images of the maps are stashed somewhere in the main directory, but exactly where is um terra incognita to me. "Here there be monsters."  ;D

You should use the ed_m01.tga / ed_m02.tga files of the maps.
Normally they live in the sfs files of the various flavours of the game (vanilla, BAT, etc...).
So you have to use the SFS Extractor.
If you use these you will not get the name of the towns to display though ...  :-X
The files you are interested in look like:

Thanks for answers. Interesting.
So there are two options and neither is perfect:
1. Screenshots - but as EHood correctly mentioned, many (if not most) maps do not fit in FMB window and need to be scrolled.
2. Through SFS Extractor (I guess a tool of modder's Black Magic  o_O ) but without toponyms.

When the mod map (found in some modpacks with SFS compressed) is published as a single mod map before composed in the modpack, you can read each tga files in its plain modmap folder of the original single version without SFSextractor.
