Is there a real need for a map tool?

If there is I might have the time to write one, give me an excuse to study the IL2 mapping system

Thank you for asking, Stainless. A map tool would be nice, but the fact is that the screenshots I've gotten are good enough for my purposes. All I'm doing is using the screenies to determine the overall outlines of a given mission - a home base, target(s), potential flight paths, etc. All of the fine tuning - take-off or spawning times, waypoint timing, object insertions, etc. - has to be worked out in the FMB.  8)

Well, for the sake of creating maps catalogue of (for example) BAT, there is such need indeed.

Not sure about "maps of maps" - placing smaller maps on larger one, either of the continent or the Earth. Probably such task have to be done manually, subject there is a way to extract Lat/Long of every map corner...

Give me a wish list in case I have chance.

I am of to Kiev again on Monday and since the weather looks cold and snowy, I may end up spending a couple of evenings in my hotel room coding.

Dimlee,

Blaubaer posted this link earlier in the discussion. Is this what you mean by a "map of maps?" It's a bit dated, but interesting.

BTW, I do agree that a catalog showing all of the current Il-2/BAT maps would be useful. Haven't counted exactly how many maps there are now, but it would be one heavyweight pdf.

 :)

EHood, yes this is exactly what I mean.
Similar map of maps for BAT would be very different with dozens(hundreds) new rectangulars all over the globe.  :)

Reading with delay, so your hotel evenings quota is probably over.  :)

Anyway, I just wondered if it is possible to have simple tool to:
1. Extract images of all maps in the BAT.  Without losing important data as probably is the case of SFS Extractor which Zoran mentioned earlier. And SFS Extractor is not "simple" for us, non-modders.  :-[
2. List coordinates of maps corners (where possible, except fictional ones). It could help to build a "Map of maps" eventually.

Yes I am back in the UK now  :)

I had a strange trip to Kiev. Couldn't get into my normal hotel so ended up in a cheap replacement.

Met a whole different type of person.

A friendly pimp.
Friendly because I resolved a fight he had with a drunk American.

A friendly limo driver who specialised in armoured vehicles
     Friend of the friendly pimp.

Several very attractive young ladies.
     Work for the friendly pimp

And a young Ukrainian girl who is studying English at university and wanted to take me for a traditional Ukrainian meal so should could practice Engleeesh.
     Errrr no thanks

I will see what time I have available to look at the mapping system.
