Hr.Ms. De Ruyter 1942 (Light Cruiser)
« on: March 07, 2018, 12:10:06 PM »

Hi everyone,
I thought it would be great to have this ship in our game and be able to take off from it in the Fokker CXI-W,
hope that maybe someone of the modders will be able to introduce it into the wide waters ;D of IL-1946 in the future.

This 1935 commissioned cruiser was the 6th of nine HNLMS De Ruyter's to sail under Dutch colors, but clearly the most well known...Three others have carried the name for the Dutch Royal Navy since...It was the flagship for the still-controversial RAdm. Karel Doorman in his mixed fleet of US, British, Australian and Dutch warships, culminating in its defeat in the Battle of the Java Sea...Adm. Doorman has been severely criticized over the years by some who accused him of cowardice and ineptitude, but as I showed in one of my books, his decisions and tactics were correct for his mission...

He was forced into a command made up of ships which had never trained together, let alone fought together, and even spoke different languages...In my estimation, the ships, their officers and crews faced an impossible assignment ordered by a politically appointed fleet commander who preferred to fight his battles behind the safety of his desk and the comfort of his own cozy bed...Doorman did his job with what he had knowing he was completely outclassed by the Japanese fleet...He went to his death with his ship...

The De Ruyter itself was a fine looking, fast light cruiser, built in an age of budget constraints and misguided pacifist politicians, suddenly thrust into a war with a ruthless enemy which had been making preparations for the moment over a period of decades...It was severely under-armored and out-gunned by the Japanese fleet of destroyers and cruisers, which also had the advantage of naval airpower launched from recently captured land bases...The Allied fleet was shadowed by Japanese recon seaplanes which marked their trail with floating flares no matter where they turned...

Coordinated training and a communications system based on a single language might have turned the battle another way, but instead badly needed warships and warriors were lost... :(...Ben

Of further interest, the wrecks of HNLMS De Ruyter, Java and Kortenaer were located on the sea bed in this century, and declared as war graves...In 2016 the wreckage had disappeared leaving only their imprints at the bottom...A joint Dutch and Indonesian investigating committee determined in 2017 that illegal salvaging of the wrecks by undersea graverobbers was the cause... :o...Ben
