SA-2 Guideline not working in BAT
« on: March 20, 2018, 05:36:40 PM »

Hello,

anyone noticed the SA-2 is not working in BAT FMB? The Nike missile is AOK though. The SA-2 gets launched without sound when enemy plane(s) approach but does not "find" target. Made several tests in FMB and... no... does not work properly.  :(

Any suggestions?

I did some investigating in the meantime.
According to my log file this is what is going on: 3do/Effects/RocketSidewinder/RocketS75SpriteBlack.eff NOT LOADED.  So, the eff. file is missing for whatever reason or... cannot be read.

I figured out someone already mentioned it in this forum.  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,20366.msg480940.html#msg480940, so it is a known issue.
I have the SA2 as a separate download from Beowolff and the IL2 Free Modding Team and it is also missing the according file. Is it wrong to conclude the SA-2 never worked properly? I think I once saw a Youtube IL2 movie in which the SA-2 was blasting planes out of the sky…

Jenato. try the fix I attached below. Unzip and put the folder into your BAT/#JTW3 dir.
Then report please.

I tried and it worked OK in some BAT Pathfinder (QMB) missions I made me.
the SA-2s have sound, a clear visible smoke trail all the way up
and yes, brings them bombers down.  :P

btw: the solution by pvt.SNAFU (thanks for this) is just 7 posts
below the post you linked.  ;)

Maybe try my QMB missions, unzip the 7z below "SA-Test" into BAT\Missions\QuickQMBPro.
Also try the quicks for this missions, unzip "Quicks" and put the 2 quick files into your BAT/Quicks dir.
You then can load SA-2_Test_blue.quick or SA-2_Test_red.quick in QMB menu.

Try with different altitudes and watch the results. Use the cameras views to watch.

Yep, everything is working AOK. I tried out your Quicks first. Watching the B-47 Stratojets attack the airfield on the Crimea I realised altitude is of all importance for the SA-2 Guideline to hit. Sound and smoke was ok. In the SA test I chose a Crusader followed by a Corsair II to see how the different altitudes, evasive abilities and set skill of AI planes come in play. The SAM's just managed to kill one out of four planes. Mine!  ;)
In my own created mission in FMB all worked well too. However,... apparently the Nike (and may be this is only in this sim and not in reality?) seems to be more potent to bring medium and high altitude flying planes down. For instance: four Sabredogs, two out of four were aces, the others average skilled pilots, are shot down by Nike missiles. I placed eight Nikes and four of them hit target. Even as much SA-2's under identical conditions only managed to bring down one Sabredog! Waaw for the Nike!
But, the missiles launch perfectly so... problem solved.

Thank you very, very much SAS~Gerax

Best regards,

..I realised altitude is of all importance for the SA-2 Guideline to hit.

When I tried the first 2 engaging SA-2s went nowhere when the planes were lower than ~ 6000m.
But when the planes came in above this level some then were killed by this 2 SA-2s with a direct frontal hit.
Also watch the SA-2s I positioned face-to-runway. they have hits when the planes come in low ..
the same with the 2 SA-2s at the other side of sevastopol. In this case the SA-2s chase the planes
and sometime hit some and bring them down. Also it seems the speed of the incoming planes
plays a role so watch this when making a mission.

And the SA-2s radius of destruction seems very high .. I watched a SA-2 exploding at least 100m
above a B-47 and this plane got some holes in his wings ..

btw: when placing the Taschkent missile cruiser in the port of Sevastopol ..
the whole incoming flight is in danger. What a killer!  :P

Glad that it works now for you.  ;)
