OK. I added the D520 line to the air.ini box and this time managed to save it, after having gone to the User Accounts and adjusted that slider. But.....when I try to start the game, after having done the restart of the computer, it gets to about 60 % of the opening sequence and stops. Now what?

Remove the plane folder from you Mods folder. Then remove the Plane line from the air.ini and
run your game..
This is what you should have added to the air.ini

D520         air.D520 1                        NOINFO   f01  SUMMER

that's exactly what I did. Unfortunately, the game opening sequence reaches 60% and goes black and reverts to the desktop screen.

Ok In you mods folder  place (  -   ) in front of the planes folder.. That is the same as removing it.
Remover the line from the air.ini then run your game.... There is a chance you may have a bad down load .
Take one step at a time and figure it out...

You do have back ups of your game?
This would be the time to use it...
You could try and reinstall the ModAct 5.3 but I don't think that will help. Worth a try

Ok here is how it should be done.
1. install base game------Play it to insure it works.
2. install up grades to get your game to 4.12.2----play it to insure it works.
3. install ModAct 5.3 -- play it to insure it works.       BACK UP at this point  that means the whole game.
 the opening screen should look like this.





If all is ok then install the new plane..
I once spent 4 days looking for a problem like you had before I said the hell with this and reinstalled...
