Gee Bee Race Single Mission
« on: September 07, 2018, 09:48:59 AM »

Hello,
I made this some time ago, expecting to make a racing campaign. I didn't manage to complete more missions, and after seeing that TGA is too quiet, I decided to share the only mission I've got.

Forget your guns for a moment and relax (?) on a thrilling race over the Nevada desert in the thirties.

You will be at the controls of the Gee Bee Model R, one of the fastest and most dangerous planes of those years.
Try to complete the circuit as fast as you can and try to stay alive for another race.
Be careful, because the Gee Bee is quite sensitive and will stall if you turn too tight (and a stall at such a low altitude will lead to a surely death!!!).

The circuit is marked with pairs of poles, just remember you must let the red pole on your left, and the blue pole on your right. If you feel like a real daring pilot, don't forget to land just in front of the audience as a 'grand finale'!!

Here you have the link to the mission. Just download and unzip into the main BAT folder. Run under TGA era. The mission will be found under Single > NN > 1933_Race folder.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ddc2m6o9w74u8it/1933_Race.7z/file

The zip file includes a new skin for the Dewoitine D.510 (which stands for a Howard DGA), to make it look like a racing plane.

WARNING: You will face two racing rivals, but remember that IL-2 AI has serious limitations. The rivals are only eye candy. They won't try to win the race and they probably will do stupid things. Their only purpose is that you do not feel alone.

Here you have some pics:

Ready for the race

This balloon leads you to the Start point. When you reach it, fly to the right and follow the road.

The public is enthusiastic!

Two or three poles at one side means that you must turn tight to the opposite side to follow the circuit:

Over the trees...

... and down the hill.

Last yards over the city:

Finish!!!

Hope you like it.

Thank you. Yes, it took a lot of object searching to make something similar to a stadium seating. However, it is quite difficult to see it from the cockpit, and especially when flying fast.  :P

I've realised that I originally put a skin for the Dewoitine with no colour indexing, so it is 3 MB. I've fixed it now to have 1 MB as usual, and I've corrected the .7z file and the link in the first post. The old skin won't hurt your game, but anyone that downloaded the mission yesterday can now replace the skin by a lighter one (in terms of MB). Sorry!

Loads perfectly fine for me.

What graphics card do you have? Could be one of those specific issues....

Intel. My stock, 4.13.4 installation works quite well with the Intel graphics and CPU cards, but I've had problems running my BAT installation in OpenGL mode. To name one example, in OpenGL I was getting the spiky clouds. Things like that stopped happening when I started using DirectX, a mode I'd never thought I'd use.

I might note that I recently loaded and started flying Mr. Prosser's Singapore (BAT/TGA) campaign, and it works perfectly well. I'm inclined to think that the problem to hand, with the Gee Bee mission, has something to do with the Reno map. When I try to open the Gee Bee mission in the FMB, no map appears, just a legend at the bottom of the screen which reads like that in the above-described error window, something about the "tirrain(sic)" not loading. Indeed, similar lines appear in the logfile I inserted into my previous reply.

The Singapore campaign can be found here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,59486.0.html

Once again, my thanks for your patience.

This is really nice. My guess is that "Reno" map is only available with BAT and not as a single map!?  :-|  Just tried to play this in DBW but not such map installed.  :(

Hi Hans-Joachim and EHood.

Nice to know that you are interested. I am sorry that you found difficulties to run the mission, but it was always intended to work under BAT.
Have you ever considered to install it?

The main advantage of BAT is that it has all the mods integred, so in theory, all users would have the same install and missions should work the same for everyone without further individual installs.

Cheers!

There have been known cases where certain tga files can't be read properly by ATI or Intel graphic cards.
So this is no general issue for you, you just might encounter the odd map with a graphics file your card does not want to digest...

You could use the site search function. But I don't know if that's a good idea... I am really unsure you should.

No, forget it. Do not use search!
