Random Skies
« on: October 17, 2018, 06:04:01 AM »

Not sure where to post this since I am unable to start this topic under the mod at issue.

Not actually a BAT issue, but I recently downloaded and installed the Random Skies mod. I wanted to try it out on my VPM and DBW installs first before adding to BAT, my go-to install.

No problem downloading and (seemingly) installing Random Skies. It runs (the menu pops up) and all the available file/folder functions work. But. . . I don’t actually get any random skies when running Il2 (DBW or VPM). I’ve tried different maps (stock and newer maps), exited in and out of Il2, started each time by running the RS application, but no changes in the sky.

I believe I followed the loading instructions correctly. The mod and accompanying textures are placed in the respective mods folder as indicated, yet no go.

Am I missing something here? Any help would be great.

Hi btasm,

Let's get Random Skies working in your B.A.T.

A) Did you install Random Skies in the #SAS folder? (Not a requirement but the best choice, otherwise the mod will get deleted during an Expansion upgrade)
You should have: BAT\#SAS\Random Skies

B) Did you install the texture-pack?
Just confirm you have, in example: BAT\#SAS\Random Skies\Textures\Heavy\TBN7.tga

C) Did you activate in JSGME DEF-SKIES_#DOF3, DEF-SKIES_#JTW3, DEF-SKIES_#TGA3 and/or DEF-SKIES_#WAW3?
These B.A.T. extras have not been updated for some time and newer maps won't probably get different skies but at least 95% of the maps should be covered.

Yes to everything? Then:

1) Run Random Skies and select 'Light' skies. Go to QMB and load a mission in the BAT_Aleutians map. Do you see a clear sky?
2) Run Random Skies and select 'Heavy' skies. Go to QMB and load a mission in the BAT_Aleutians map. Do you see a cloudy sky?

Let us know how it goes

Whistler:

Thank you for your quick reply.

It was entirely my fault. Although I thought I had placed the TB+VP textures in the Random Skies folder, I had not. Don't know how I overlooked this.

Corrected it now. Sorry for the bother. Works well. Fine mod.

Hi Whistler. Thank you for your Random Skies mod. I am enjoying the deeper immersion they bring.
One query though. I ticked random box for QMBs and occasionally I get blue tinged clouds mixed with normal. Most of the time the weather is as expected. Am I missing something or not to worry.

Google Il2 1946 Random Skies 2.6 and that should take you to the Mission4today website and download.

Find all details, including download locations, in the Random Skies topic here at SAS.

I cannot picture the issue larschance, perhaps if you share a screenshot?

Thanks for getting back to me Whistler. I have a new monitor and after the first three missions the problem has not recurred yet so I cant get a screenshot. It may be the monitor has settled down.
FYI the clouds were cumulus in a clear sky and were both separate white and light blue tinge mixed. It could be the programmes were competing for space. If it happens again I will come back to you. It was odd but the QMBs since have been okay.
The QMB setting is Stalingrad RRR map, 8 109G2s 1942 wait to scramble as 8 La5s and 8 I16 type 29s also 1942 fly over the city to strafe the Luftwaffe base. Random Skies box is set to Random.

Send over a screenshot if you ever get weird skies again. Your description is good and I appreciate it but I just cannot see it :-|

The mod only changes the 'High Clouds' texture of a map, a seamless pattern image that gets repeated over and over by the engine. Enable the Quadrants.tga texture (Random Skies/Textures/Custom/Quadrants.tga), select 'Custom' in the Launcher and see for yourself. Middle (or low) clouds remain untouched by the mod.

When flying at (really) high altitudes you will notice the sky begins to distort in the horizon. It is not that noticeable with 'clear' textures though. Keep this in mind when flying Jets or strategic bombers and select 'Light' skies for missions at high altitude, if you care :P

Speaking of light textures, I normally leave it at random but I got a little tired of repeated cloudy skies and I found a source with an additional 23 light textures and there are less chances of cloudy skies now. It will all be released in the next version, sometime after 4.14 comes out. All textures will be also included in the main download and the texture-pack will not be required anymore.

Cheers!
