remember, there is more invloved to stopping repeating looking textures than just making them tileable
careful selection of the textures not having large dark or large light areas on them help in not making the repeat themselves over and over

Don't talk to me about making tileable textures actually look tileable ... ha ha. Once you go higher than a certain altitude (depending on which map it is, but generally above 1500m terrain height) it is such a challenge to make good textures that do not repeat themselves in some small way or another. I don't think I've ever managed to. Maybe a reason I always fly missions at low attitude - 500m starting out. A added advantage is that you get to admire all the ground and object details when flying at that height ...

Yes Avala's are really great too. He got the program from me and Viking was the one who turned me on to it. Here it is...

http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/viewer/download_viewer.htm

If you like I can write a tutorial on how to make shallows textures of your own.

Thanks a lot for that link, Sir!
ATM I am busy doing my own little RL project for a youth center and getting my skills to "teach" back.
I can only say your shallows are so artistic, I can not imagine to ever make anything that even comes near this beauty.

Agracier: IMHO redko sort of mastered the skill of making textures that look great from high altitude, my personal opinion of course, I love your maps and especially the dry maps like Ifni.
 :)

I fly many sims (well lately mostly IL-2) and I often quote the SAS/AAS map forum threads on other forums as examples of creativity and art with regard to building theatres that convince and entertain..on the base of a 10 year old game engine.  ??? :P
Amazing, for me since modded IL-2 with maps the sim's immersion and value has increased far above the range of the usual war game shit which sort of has no substance except online or to train skills (to me  ;) ).

I was flying DaveODO6's Wake retextured map today and started playing around with a sandy shallows texture for it. Dave's shallows is really great but you know me I just have to play with the shallows on every map. ;D
Wake looks like this...

Well I see there is very little vegitation in the shallows so I thought of just a sandy floor. The one I made has ripples of sand as if the waves kicked the bottom up to have the ripples. Now mind you the ripples are VERY large but I made the texture as small as I could effects wise. It is still 1024x1024 but thanks to Uufflakke I made it only 1mb. I'm not saying this looks like it would in real life as far as the sand under the water goes but I noticed the waves of the water when you chose poor weather go in the same direction of the ripples of my texture.
Here are a few pics...

I know it doesnt look real but I thought I would ask you guys what you think and ask if you want it.
Let me know. 8)

Thanks guys. If you want I'll upload it a few and post a link. I really like Daves version of this map. It inspired me today to play around and make this one. I love the way the waves go inline with the sand ripples. I didnt make it that way it just worked out.:)

You know whats funny Dak? At the same time we were making an almost identical mission.

I was using F4F's but all my pics were of the Japanese planes....
