Thanks to you and all those who work to evoke history, even if everyone does not always agree on what the priorities are.

Cheers,

Hello guys, just a quick update. ;)

Progress is slow, some parts are more difficult to reproduce due to some complexity of shape, the roof
of the small building at the front for instance, it took many days and a few versions:

With the original high poly model I am using as a template by its side you can see what I still need to
do before mapping begins. :D

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Around the back and sides, doing some of the easier bits first. :D

The detail around the bottom of the building is quite pronounced on this building so I included it rather
than try and paint it on the skin.

Hello again, took a few weeks away from this project but back on it now. ;)

With the spire added Etchmiadzin Cathedral is finally starting to look like a religious building:

Some pillars were added at the rear and a doorway at the side near the front, next up will be the
entrance with its tower and turret, that could get a little tricky. :D

Looking forward, Pete.

Glad you like it so far Ivan, will be a while yet but it is getting there. ;)

..fast wie..

Yes, once I add all the turrets it will really start to look something like. ;)

Construction has begun on the entrance, my version will be a little less ornate but hopefully
close enough for our old game:

Stay tuned. :D

Hello again guys, just a quick update. ;)

I have constructed most of the entrance area now with its turret and arches, the model was starting
to get up to the poly limit by now and there were still the three turrets to add to the sides and rear of
the building. :(

I tried a simplified version of those towers using cloned parts of a earlier model just to get a idea of the
final look with all the parts added:

Unfortunately even with those simplified towers we are some 300 poly over the normal limit for IL-2 objects
and due to the arches used in the construction there is very little way to reduce it even using alpha cuts in
some places:

The model is already much simplified compared to the original building so I need to decide how to go on
with this.

Options:

Search around the model to find any way of further reducing the poly count but some parts would be very basic indeed.

Leave off the three small towers.

Do the three small towers as they should be but make them as a second object to apply with the main building in game.

Could some of you share your thoughts on that please?

I think that in most cases users will see these at a distance...such as 400-500 meters at least. Since the 3 towers are a fundamental architectural detail, I think those should stay and let some parts be "very basic" as you say.

I agree, the fundamental architectural detail has to include the towers, the issue was how best to go about doing it and within the polygon limit if possible so I could make it a single object and if not do I do two separate objects. ;)

So, with some optimization and a little simplification of most of the building here is what I think I can live with:

From photographs it is difficult to determine if the towers have five or six faces, I had to go with five to keep
the whole thing just under 3000 polygon.  8)

If you look up into the various tower structures you will be able to see through things because it was necessary
to remove some faces, however, that only really becomes a issue if you are trying to make a image close up for
a scene, from the obligatory fast moving aircraft at 1000 metres it might look okay, I hope. :D

Now I need to tidy things up and map all the parts, could still take some time but getting there. :o

Hello guys, family issues are slowing things a little but the mapping is underway. ;)

Skin is just a few images from actual photographs copied and pasted just to get a idea of what goes
where, it will need the attention of a good artist to do something decent.
