Ta-3 twin-engine fighter

Tairov proposed the creation of a multi-purpose fighter-attack aircraft, in which the integrated effectiveness of combat use was enhanced by high flight speed and maneuverability (both in the horizontal and vertical planes), enhanced booking and powerful cannon armament located near the axis of the aircraft, which allowed large-caliber aircraft guns and provided high accuracy when firing in the air.
The construction of the first instance of the OKO-B was completed on December 8, 1939. Factory tests of the first instance were started at TsAGI on December 31, 1939. The first flight took place on January 21, 1940. The first stage of testing was completed on June 8, 1940 and the OKO-6 was transferred to plant number 81 for finishing.
At 0K0-6, everything was aimed at achieving a high flight speed: the installation of two M-88 engines with a total capacity of 2,200 liters. with. (at the second altitude boundary - 7000 m), extremely small dimensions, minimal midsection of the fuselage and very streamlined forms.
The length of the aircraft, the area and wing span almost coincided with the single-engine Harrikein and were smaller than that of the American single-engined R-47 Thunderbolt. The aircraft was notable for its powerful offensive armament, consisting of 4 ShVAK cannons, with increased survivability the pilot and the use of more durable in battle engines air cooling.
The maximum speed of the earth was 470 km / h, at an altitude of 5000 m - 575 km / h and at an altitude of 7050 m - 595 km / h, landing speed - 135 km / h The flight was carried out on one motor.
The weapon worked fine. During factory tests, 2,980 shots were fired from cannons, of which in the 1804 dash and 1176 in the air.
In June 1940, shortly after the end of the first stage of production tests, at a joint meeting of the leadership of the NKAP and the Space Agency's UVAA, it was decided: "... It would be expedient to designate plant No. 43 for putting into serial production of the armored fighter OKO-6 2M-88 All the necessary preparation for production to finish in 1940.
Despite the positive attitude of the military and the National Communist Party to the aircraft, it was not possible to bring the Ta-3 to mass production. October 29, 1941, during the flight to the city of Kuybyshev Tairov was killed in a plane crash in the Penza region.
As a result, the Ta-3 was left without the Chief Designer. This tragic accident and the relocation of industry dramatically slowed down work on the aircraft.
