Few questions about BAT, maps, HUD ect
« on: March 28, 2019, 05:17:23 PM »

Just have a couple questions about Il2 1946 in general, and since I am on vacation on the BOX forums I can't reply to bombs away on there.

Anyways,

Where are the map files located? What files are they exactly? Trying to add some of the VP modpack maps to BAT. I tried just adding the entire Dgen folder but that didn't work out as well as I hoped.

Been trying to get DCG working, which I mean it works just fine with the stock DCG campaigns but I saw there's some really great maps in BAT, like the western europe 44 map which is massive and includes a bit of england, would love to fly a DCG campaign on it but you can't find it in game with DCG on or in the program itself making your own. I am not exactly a coder or super knowledgeable on intricate notepad writing, but I can figure out some stuff I am sure. There's just SO much info and outdated info around that it's hard to figure out whats what.

Just really want some good USAAF western europe stuff that doesn't start you off in the air flying a boring escort over berlin and then back out of the map to finish up. Again there's just so, so much info and variables and stuff to work with it's truly overwhelming.

BAT's really great, the flight models and cockpits and everything are just fantastic it just seems like unless I know how to make my own campaigns I am SOL. Which I do not.

Just any tips on DCG with BAT, or getting VP modpack dgen campaigns working in BAT would be awesome, I guess I could just play VPmodpack with it's stuff which is pretty excellent as well just think BAT has a much better overall experience it's capable of delivering.

Also is there a good guide on DGen config lines you can use to tailor it a bit more? I have the copy pasted config from the VP modpack mod page pasted into it.

Almost forgot, in VP modpack and I can still have that little hud info in the bottom left corner, in BAT I can't get it to come up with any options checked or unchecked. Like speed and alt. Any way I can get that on in BAT?

Just want to say thanks to all the people that continue to make 1946 a game worth playing in 2019.

For the DCG campaigns, take a look at the BAT\Missions and Campaigns\WAW section.

War Over Italy: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,58493.0.html
Battle of Britain: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,58493.0.html

and many more...just takes a moment of effort.

I did see all those, trust me I've looked through there multiple times, found nothing of interest sadly. I am giving this italy campaign a shot, the maps fantastic. The static campaigns don't really interest me. There are a ton of those.

Where do I place maps? I am trying to bring over some of the maps from VP modpack to BAT, but don't know where they are supposed to be placed since the file structure isn't the same.

I apologize for the dumb questions I see the thread at the top of the page where I can add VP to BAt, I will just do that.

Hi Jon. All maps will go in your MapMods folder. There is a _tex folder for the textures that come with the map and in the MapMods folder is an all.ini. Open it with note pad and add the maps entry to it where you want to group it with such as in it's PTO section.

Hey, sorry couldn't reply on the il2 forums, am on a small vacation for voicing displeasure in their moderating, but anyways I will see if I can do it, just trying to move maps from VP modpack to the BAT install so the dgen campaigns work in BAT.

I've modded plenty of games in the past, but this one is certainly confusing especially with the differences that BAT makes in the file structure. VP has multiple mapmod files, I should really just play VP modpack haha.

What was done on this and other sites is imho high level modding. We started with nothing (a modified il2.exe, a wrapper.dll and an incomplete list of files inside the sfs archives), all the tools and methods were created by the modding community. On the official forums modding was not only not supported but they deleted every single post related to modding for a very long time (3-4 years). At some point they gave up, but the damage was already done. We probably lost dozens of potential modders due to this behaviour. Many years later there are still attempts to prevent modding of this game: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,60960.50.html
This should explain why modding in IL-2 is a bit more difficult than other games, basically it was never designed to be modded. It's a miracle that we have packs like BAT and vpmodpack.

Stock dgen only uses maps and planes from the original game hence the vpmodpack dgen campaign set should work in any install and any game version above 4.09 (all vesrions of UP3, DBW, HSFX, BAT, Modact, etc).

I also have to add that the dgen campaign do not require the MAPMODS folders from vpmopack, those are only cosmetic changes. Transfering them to BAT is possible but it would take days because you would also have to add the required few hundred extra objects and their ini entries to BAT. Plus check ~150 actors.static files for the missing objects otherwise you wont be able to save missions on those maps. A very very long process. :D

BAT on version 3.5 has all the stock maps present.
BAT has 400 maps and nearly 7000 objects to feed them. So maybe you want to look before starting to move stuff from vp into it. 8)

Bat has 400 ww2 era maps? I didn't see them.

All I wanted to do was play some of the dgen missions from VP in BAT. I don't know why people are acting like I am dissing one or the other.

I ended up breaking the BAT install and kind of just gave up. I played VP pack first so when I got bat and had it all setup and installed and saw there was just the 2 stock dgen USAAF campaigns for the pacific I was a bit disappointed. I don't know why asking about it seems to make people upset. I am not a mission designer and don't ever plan on becoming one. I am not asking for content to be made specifically for me. Just wanted to ask some simple questions.

BAT can have 5000 objects and maps and all this but if there's nothing the average user can do with any of it then it's all kind of pointless. All the jet stuff and other stuff is not of my interest, I like the ww2 stuff and some of the ww1 stuff that's about it.
