Gear won't raise/lower
« on: April 21, 2019, 06:13:31 PM »

I have my landing gear set to raise/lower by hitting the letter G.  All of a sudden, it won't.  Did I not do something else required?  From what I can recall I have always done it that way.  As soon as I hit A for autopilot the gear will raise or lower if appropriate.  You notice I stated "from what I can recall" earlier.  I turn 77 in a couple of months so most probably I forgot. :-[ Anyway, any help or suggestion is really, really appreciated.  Thank you.

A simple question: on your Controls panel do you have a button assigned for the "Landing Gear"?
May be it is "blank", for whatever reason.

no, you just have selected a plane that has the "manual gear" function. It's a different key, which has to be pressed repeatedly, like using a pump handle....

Thank you very much for your response.  I'm sure that was the problem, thanks for pointing it out.  Man, if you young guys could understand how hard it is getting to play this game by us old guys.  Every time I turn around something has changed.  I try my best to keep up with all the mods and stuff, but after I download/install them, I'm still not sure what it is I have done.  Don't get me wrong.  I appreciate all the efforts as I'm sure everyone else does, and the problems I have mostly reside between my ears.  And, by the way, is the deal about the manual lowering/raising gear something new, or had it always been that way?  Just curious, and still seeking ways to keep me from looking stupid.  Thanks again for your help and patience.

The F4F series and the I-16 series have always had manually operated gear.  Now, some aircraft, and I'm not sure which ones (discovered only through trial and error...and necessity...) will allow gear to be lowered manually after the gear retraction gear is damaged in combat.  If your gear won't go down...always try doing it manually before bellying in.

Had to look it up, but, the early mk1 Spitfires had this type of system. I found a phrase referring to "Spitfire Knuckle".

Yep, it just so happened that I was playing the excellent Guadalcanal campaign and the of which the F4F is a part.  And just a question - how old is "ol Air Force"?  I was USN from 1960 to 1982.  Thanks for all y'all's help.

ol' Navy...I'm just a babe at 60.  Active duty 76-81.  USAF brat from 58-76...funny...I enlisted at 17 (my mom had to sign) so's I wouldn't get drafted by the Army.  That scared me.  Glad you got the landing gear thing worked out.  Cheers and prost.

Thanks for your service dude.  And yep, y'all's fix did the trick.  Now it's just a case of getting my fingers to work right, trying to "pump" the gear down manually.
