Can anyone suggest a TGB file viewer/editor
« on: June 02, 2019, 09:57:56 AM »

I'm working on deck-crews for all the aircraft carriers that don't currently have them by simply re-mapping the positioning of the existing figures meshes from Ranwers to fit the decks of Western's IJN fleet and light carriers and the British fleet carriers. This is quite easy to do but time consuming and tedious.

My problem is that I also want to replace the static flags on the ships with animated versions so need to remove the flag images from the skin1o.tgb and skin1o.tga files - the .tga files are straightforward and can be done in Gimp or similar but I can't find an editor that will allow the .tgb files to be edited.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Change file name to (whatever).tga and open it in any normal tga editing programme.

When you have finished, rename as original ...

Simples ...  ;)

Thanks Gunny but I'm afraid Paint.net does not open TGB files. Gimp will open TGB files but does not allow editing - so you can't remove the flag image - and even if you could, it would not be possible to save it as a TGB file.

Thanks GJE but if I rename the skin1o.tgb to skin1o.tga or skin1o.tgb.tga, yes I can open it and edit it, but I can't save it back as a tgb file - I get "not a recognised file extension" in both Gimp and Paint.net so the file remains in it's renamed state, which means it can not over-ride skin1o.tgb file in the corresponding 3do ship folder - which means the static flag image remains inside the original ship mod folder, and the ship shows the static flag in the game.
I can still put an animated flag on to the model but it looks crazy with the static flag still in place.

You say when finished rename as original - but how?
Is there a way to change the file type without using an editor?

I'll see if it does what I want and report back
Meanwhile thanks for replies.

EDIT - No sadly the IMF Viewer does not open or save TGB files

IMF viewer is the way to go for those special tga files in imageforge file format.
Quite like you'd rename tgb files to tga for opening them, in order to save them simply rename the resulting file back from tga to tgb.

Thanks Mike, but therein lies my problem - even in Gimp I can open the TGB files by simply adding the TGA extension; so, for example, I change skin1o.tgb to skin1o.tgb.tga then I can open and edit the file to my hearts content.
But how do I resave the file back to skin1o.tgb.
None of the viewers/editors I have tried will allow the TGB file extension to be saved!

Ever heard of the famous Windows File Explorer?
Rumors are that it can rename files as well as file extensions.

It's so easy, open the x.TGB with IrfanView and you'll see.

Easier, copy the x.TGB file on desktop and rename to x.TGA.

That's all.

Best regards, Gerhard  :)

Thanks Mike and Gerhard
It seems I live in a parallel universe where the simple laws of Windows operating commands are different to everyone else's.
After eagerly downloading IrfanView 64bit version for my Windows 7 Home Professional, I quickly found the same problems I had with Gimp and Paint - sure I can open TGB files, but the "save as" options do not include TGB file.

So, "change the name" I hear you all shout!!! Yes?
Also just echoed by Ashe as I was writing

--- and after editing the tga file, rename it to *.tgb

But, I must be missing something really fundamental here??
I "right click" to change the file name, right? The file name goes blue and I can change the name ok - but that doesn't change the file-type, so I've got the same file, just with a different name.

How do I get to altering the file from TGA to TGB?
