Select File Explorer options from the control panel. Select the View tab in the Folder options dialog. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types."

Thanks Vonofterdingen, that did the trick, but I feel very embarrassed that I am so ignorant about Windows systems.
Well you are never too old to learn, and in my case that's saying something  ;D

Thanks to all who replied

No reason to be embarrassed. The extensions are turned off by default and as you just found, the procedure to turn them back on is obscure to say the least. I recommend leaving that setting unchecked; you may need future access to file extensions for any number of reasons.

Yes, indeed; having the file extensions displayed is much more logical.

Thanks again.

1) first copy and paste the TGB file you want to work on, on your desktop ...

2) right click on it and chose "rename"

3) rename the B in TGB into a A, to get a TGA extension

4) Windows will warn you that if you change the extension of a file, bla bla bla, don't worry and save

5) you now have a TGA file that you can treat in Gimp or any other relevant prog

6) once done to your liking, save you work, still in TGA format

7) copy and paste this edited TGA to your desktop

8) NOW you can rename it into a TGB file, and thus get a TGB file after you edited it with Gimp or else ...  ;)

So to sum up, put the original TGB file on your desktop in order to be able to turn it into a TGA one that your Gimp or else can save

Once edited and saved in TGA format, copy it to your desktop to be able to rename it into a TGB format, which is something your prog can't apparently do ...  ;)

Thanks Mick, I finally got there.
Like I said above, I'm so embarrassed at not even being able to operate Windows correctly  ;D

Thanks again to all who helped
