Re: Vancouver Island - Cannot 'save' mission :(
« Reply #12 on: June 10, 2019, 11:53:40 AM »

Hi, this looks AMAZINg - but unfo0rtunately, i cannot SAV any mission created in FMB (even with only one aircraft added)?
Are there some distinct/custom textures i may be missing?

thanks,

save error is about missing objects usually.

I had the same problem and checked the actors.static . Goldguru didn't install any static objects. You need at least 1 static object to save missions. I cleared the actors.static and opened the map in FMB mapmaker and put in a small hut and saved it. Then I could fly missions no problem.

Can you pls send me YOUR actors.static file to give that a try?

here is the latest version It has 2 airfields one I spent alot of time working on making it so the AI would take off land & park.both are in the lower rh corner of the map

https://www.mediafire.com/file/9xszp5o56rgosij/Vanisle3.7z/file

It took a long time due to my color perceptions troubles following the tutorial for I could not make out what he was showing in the screen shots very well.

I'm presently try to figure out a way to make the High mnt lakes look correct,I'm beleive i'll have to settle for them being solid, for using any water causes them to turn into large pits.
unless some one has an Idea on how to make a water.tga that does not have a zero altitude code imbeded in it?

Hello Goldguru,

I was very excited to see your "Vancouver Island map" as a WIP.   Like you, I'm a novice at IL-2 stuff, and trying to figure things out as I go.   I know nothing about mapmaking...but was excited about the possibility of flying over Haley Lake Ecological Reserve or Estevan Point - I have some history in these parts (my current airport is YPW and I spent a lifetime chasing endangered species on Vancouver Island).

I tried your "version 1".  It opened in FMB, but as others have reported, I was unable to save mission files.  I tried replacing the "static.actors" file with that provided by Mandrill #16, and that worked - sort of.

Your latest "version 2" just doesn't open in FMB at all.  I get a Java error.  No worries.  It's probably something simple...and why it's always useful to ask for help!

The water.tga does not have a zero altitude code in it. It's just a tga. The deal with zero altitude is that you can only install a BRIDGE at zero altitude.

If you change the zero altitude of the huge pits in the middle of your mountain range and put the lakes at a level altitude slightly below your mountains, you will get lakes that are just fine.

You also have map_c problems because your lakes are often at RGB128 or higher. That means they just show as land. I have been messing around with your map, but there are dozens of lakes which are not dark enough to show up.

You also drew solid bands around all the land on your map_h. This is not necessary, as the map_h accurately interprets the height data. The solid bands serve to mess up the surf and to make some of the coastline look weird. I have spent some time removing the solid bands, but again - there are a lot of them.

"You also drew solid bands around all the land on your map_h."

I have no idea here for I have only made 5-6 flat area's on map_h for airfields I have not made any bands.
however I did only use a 2.5 blur verses 5 for that was the highest amount that did not wipe out the detail of the harbour entrance I was wanting to preserve.(lighthouse area on the map)
I have noticed there are  a few places where the water/beach are buckled but I was not concerned due to how small an area it was compared to the overall map area.

"If you change the zero altitude of the huge pits in the middle of your mountain range and put the lakes at a level altitude slightly below your mountains, you will get lakes that are just fine"

so if the surrounding beach of a lake is RGB 115 & I color the lake area rbg 100 (on map_h) then I will have a flat lake near the correct height?
I will experiment with this chosing a single lake & test, however if that is required I fear that maybe to great a task to modify them all for there are hundreds..

there was no Mymap_c in the last file so have you decompiled it to view or are you going by another version?
present Mymap_c would have a timestamp 06/08/2019.

I'm begining to wonder whether or not I should have made the map smaller to 25%, 4 maps to  cover the entire island for it seems that @ the present size I'm sacrifying detail for my wish to see the whole island.however the detail is directly related to the scale of the original DEM's
the island alone is 31,285 km² the entire map area covers ~ 165,782.44 km² or so.(according to google maps)

thnx Gold

I do not understand then. There are solid colour bands all around the coast that distort and buckle the shoreline and disrupt the surf. I have taken off most of them by colour replacing them 1 by 1 with RGB000 on the map_h.

Yes, that will work. I have done it on a few. I also recoloured some of the lakes on the mymap_c and blurred them, so I got lakes with less than RGB128 centres. This will produce lakes with water in them. This will take a huge amount of time. Welcome to map making. It is labour intensive and takes a helluva lot of time to do it right!

I made a mymap_c to play around with.

I like that. It gives scope for a long flight in a prop plane with lots of immersion or a decent flight in a jet.

I believe I found what caused all the "PITS" when you fisrt use the bucket fill to make your Mymap_c I did not pay any attn to what other areas were active..many upland area's were/are involved in that selection & I did not realize & just hit the bucket fill

So I'm starting over from scratch I located a 1x1 arc download should give me 30m files from here you must register
for d/l acces

https://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ALOS/en/aw3d30/index.htm

files are in TiF format.

Sadly Microdem does not fully colorfill the lakes so I'm coloring lakes @ the present, just finished the Grey map will work on the color map tomorrow
I made the map_C, H, T, & loaded the map with the lakes as is but it wasnt any good,my map_H showed full size lakes but they were not displayed in the game.
about 10 hrs of painting on the Grey map my eyeballs need a rest or my crayon will be over the linne far to often.
I'm goiing to have todo some house cleaning on my pc for all the files that I've made & tested..lol
