Killer in the Dark - A He-219 Night Fighting Campaign!

I just had a quick look at my nightfighting campaigns, and the good news is that they can be lifted over to BAT with a minimum of effort. (As they only have one aircraft, and everything is very dark, I don't think I will bother with taxi-to-takeoff.) And now the first one has been converted and posted:



It is a semi-historical, 8-mission static campaign, set in early 1944, and using CY6's revolutionary "Command and Control" mod. In this you are a German Night Fighter pilot, flying the Heinkel He-219 Uhu, facing ever stronger night attacks by the British RAF, including an increasing threat from enemy Nightfighters and Intruders. But you will also get better radar and electronic counter measures.

Most mission will involve finding and attacking big RAF bomber streams, on their way to or back from target (but avoid attacking them OVER the target, as you will probably be shot at by friendly AA artillery). But you will also be involved in other missions, like hunting for Allied mine layers, or intercepting high-altitude recce aircraft.





There is a random element in this campaign, with the individual mission having small variations, for instance regarding weather, spoof raids and enemy night fighters presence. And in some missions you might actually be directed to a friendly aircraft, so be sure that you identify your target before attacking! In the later missions is it is also possible that you will have much more limited fuel – reflecting the increasing pressure that the Luftwaffe found itself under, not least logistically. So even if you replay the campaign, it will not be exactly the same. (All missions comes in three variants, the game picking one at random.)





Select a high starting rank, like Major. Regarding difficulty: select the "No Icons" and “No padlock” options! And also keep the map icons options "OFF"! You will receive directions - in the form of text mesaages across the screen - both from a Ground Controller and from your own on-board Radar operator. (And also experience some Electronic Warfare counter measures by the enemy.) A successful intercept depends on you following the directions. Just following the way-points on the map will not be enough.

I love missions in the dark. I suck at it though. I normally hit stuff during take offs because I can't see s**t (external views forbidden!). And when I manage to get back, the night sets on fire... I love the feeling all the same. The cockpit truly comes to life during night missions.

You are welcome! It IS tricky, but see to it that the lights in the room are way down low. It helps a bit. But I agree: night hunting missions are very tense, and quite unlike standard daytime Il-2 missions. Which says a lot for this game!

Dear Poltava,

A vehicles.stationary.Navaid$NavaidUnit entry is present in most missions however this object does not exist in BAT. Can I replace it with the vehicles.stationary.CandC$NavUnit or should I just forget about it?

Sorry, I missed that one. It is not imperative to have a navigator, but it can be a help to have one, so yes, do so. I will update the campaign with the proper NAV object!

EDIT: Have fixed this now! It was the proper NAV object in mission 1 but then the other one in the other missions. I have switched them now, and updated the campaign and the download. Thanks Whistler for the heads-up!

Dear Poltava, where can I get the updated campaign?
I also have a strange bug, I hope the update is going to fix it: as soon as I start the mission, the right landing gear just collapses and i sit down in the dirt.....and obviously I cannot go on take off.

If I change the plane, it jumps in the air and explodes at the start of the mission
In VPMedia modpack it seems to work...........

This is strange. NOT GOOD. Can someone else confirm this? Seems there is some strange bug, probably a clash of mods, inside BAT 😱

My collegue Edc/Stan thinks that the problem is that the campaigns are using a map that is not in the air.ini, but hidden in the SFS files somewhere. (That's why you get it to load.)

Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Poltava,

I tested this in BAT3.71 (with my added mods) and a vanilla BAT3.71 install. I do not see the same problem posted by geppo68. Submitting a logfile may help.
