Change P-51 Markings?
« on: June 22, 2019, 10:59:50 AM »

Hi, I have noticed that the P-51 and P-47 D variants both use numbers. Is that a way to change them to letters, like they used in the ETO?

I can't see the reason why.

The North America P-51D-20NA Mustang, for example, is the correct variant designation. It was the 20th sub-variant built on the North American Inglewood, California plant, for the P-51D model.

The P-51D-20NT is the 20th sub-variant built on the Dallas. Texas plant.

Any sub-variant came with some minor modifications in relation of the basic model, as for a P-51D or P-47D, with a number followed by the specific plant code letters.

Cheers.

I think bobtt123 is speaking about USAAF unit identification aircraft markings.

In ETO, the USAAF adopted the system used by the RAF to identify squadrons, using fuselage codes of two letters to denote a squadron and a third single letter to identify the aircraft within the squadron.

Yes- many British planes in the game can be assigned a British squadron, with the appropriate two-letter squadron code, and usually an "A" for the player's individual aircraft letter. It might be fun if someone could come up with an E.T.O. aircraft markings mod to similarly assign squadron codes to American aircraft that used them in that theatre.

... there are so many P51 and P47 skin packs, including ETO ones, that you should easily find what you're looking for, without needing any mod allowing ETO letter based codes ...  ;)

Well, in general the Il-2 marking system is due to a revison IMHO, there are so many wrong markings.

The skin packs are great for missions, but they are not operative when you play campaigns with lots of planes, apart from being a tedious process. In any case, it is what we have.

But, having said that, I have tried to modify these things in my installation with some success, very little, and from my point of view, not enough.

I think one of the best programs in his day was MAT Manager, even after 19 or 20 years I still use it, albeit with some difficulty. But Aces, the author, could not do everything he wanted, precisely the origin of this post is one of these things, despite his enormous altruistic effort. I have to said thanks again for all the years I've been enjoying it.

Many things depend on others, and if you get a good result in a sticker but get the opposite effect in others, in the end you leave it as it is or you try to find an intermediate solution that does not seem good to anyone.

That's the main reason way we don't have letters in European P-47/51s.

I forgot that there is another small program, 8AF MATs that introduces the real letter codes in the B-17G and the original P-51B, unfortunately I do not remember where I downloaded it.

... here is a good read about Mat Manager ...  ;)

You can believe that after more than twenty years using MAT Manager, today I found out what the "save" and "load" buttons are for.
Incredible but true  :)

Thanks Mick!
