1st Air Commando Group by DixieCapt - revamped for BAT WAW
« on: August 30, 2019, 09:47:44 AM »

Here's another exciting piece of work by DixieCapt, adapted to be playable in BAT WAW
Based on the UP2 version of 2010

1st Air Commando Group

Fly P-51A, B-25H and C-47....

In this campaign you will play a pilot assigned to a new unit whose job it will be to provide strict air cover for Special Forces units in Burma. This unit is to be called the 1st Air Commando Group. The Unit objectives have been carefully defined by General Hap Arnold, as follows:

1. To facilitate the forward movement of British Special Forces.
2. To facilitate the supply and evacuation of these Special Forces.
3. To provide a small air cover and striking force.
4. To acquire air experience under the rainy seasons of Burma.

Thirteen C47's were acquired along with one hundred CG4A Waco Gliders for transport operations. For light aircraft L-5 Stinsons were chosen due to their ability to carry 2 or 3 stretchers. The fighter requirement was covered when thirty North American P51A Mustangs were acquired. For the strike element twelve North American B25H and J Mitchell bombers were obtained which were initially destined for the 14th Air Force.

On March 5, 1944 the first major joint operation involving Wingate’s Chindits and the 1st Air Commando Group is to begin. This operation, code named Operation Thursday will test the Chindits and the Air Commandos ability to work as one.

This Campaign will traverse the war in Burma from Operation Thursday to the Battle of Imphal, and the capture of Mandalay and Lower Burma in 1945.

Harold,
I have plans for some of your Agents with flying experience. Recently at the Casablanca Conference the President was introduced to a British Colonel named Ord Wingate. Wingate operated a Special Forces program in Burma and wants to return to do such with allied air support. The President loved Wingate, called him the next Lawrence of Arabia, and then charged Major General Hap Arnold to create a unit whose job it would be to provide strict air cover for Wingate’s jungle commandos. Stop. The President made it clear that he expects the Office of Strategic Services to support and utilize Haps new unit, which is where our flying agents come in. End.

The group tested the United States' first use of a helicopter in combat, six Sikorsky R-4s led by Lt. Col. Clinton B. Gaty, in May 1944.
