How the He!! to fly a campaign?
« on: August 30, 2019, 10:33:24 AM »

Man, am I stupid or what?

I haven't played a campaign in BAT - the last one I flew was over two years ago in my heavily modified 4.12.2.

I've been trying to get to fly some really amazing looking campaigns here but can't get things to run. I've tried the "BIG USMC campaign - reworked for BAT WAW and JTW!", and the recently released "1st Air Commando Group by DixieCapt - revamped for BAT WAW" and I can't get past the opening screen. In the case of the "BIG USMC campaign - reworked for BAT WAW and JTW!" I am set into a Dynamic Campaign Generator starting in Wake. In the case of the "1st Air Commando Group by DixieCapt - revamped for BAT WAW" I get nothing at all.

I've put these missions in their proper folders - UM for the Marines and US for the 1st Air Commando Group.

Where have I gone wrong?

I have no idea what you talk about....

Pilot Career  >  new > USAAF > set desired difficulties and rank  > scroll to the career you actually want (fx "1st Air Commando Group 2 (BAT WAW)") > Start

If you can't find the career you want in the pulldown, it is not in the correct folder. Check the folder structure.

First off, to be clearer, I'm running BAT 3.7.1 Le Grande Cirque with patch.

Okay, here's what I come up with:

1/ Main Menu hit "Pilot Career."
2/ "New Pilot Career" menu hit "Air Force" and scroll down to "USAAF"
3/ Go down to "Rank" and there's nothing there - clicking the little button has no response.
4/ Go over to "Career" and clicking the little button has no response there either.
5/ Go to "Difficulty" and make changes (or not). Repeat steps 3 and 4 above with the same results.

My folder structure looks like this:

(C:)/BAT 3.7/Missions/Campaign/US

In the "US" folder are a series of awards - both .mat and .tga. There are also two "icon" files again, both .mat and .tga. At the top is the folder "ACG2". Within "ACG2" are the various mission .mis and .properties files along with the campaign.ini and info.properties files as well as a folder marked "Video".

In trying the USMC career:

1/ Main Menu hit "Pilot Career."
2/ "New Pilot Career" menu hit "Air Force" and scroll down to "USMC"
3/ Go down to "Rank" and there's now "2nd Lieutenant" (I made changes to the rank structure in the USMC because, by the time WW2 rolled around, there were fewer and fewer "Gunnery Sergeant" ranks flying). I can also choose other ranks with no difference below.
4/ Go over to "Career" and clicking the little button only shows what is already in the text window - "*US Marine Corps."
4a/ In the "Description" window it shows, "Dynamic campaign for USMC pilot in the Pacific."
5/ Go to "Difficulty" and make changes (or not). Repeat steps 3 and 4 above with the same results.

My folder structure looks like this:

(C:)/BAT 3.7/Missions/Campaign/UM

In the "UM" folder are a series of awards - both .mat and .tga. There are also two "icon" files again, both .mat and .tga. There is a "rank.properties" file in which I made the rank changes. At the top is the folder "USMCareerWAW". Within "USMCareerWAW" are the various mission .mis and .properties files along with the campaign.ini and info.properties files.

Do you have a rank.properties files? (and it's important: without any locale label)
You can't play without ranks and if that's missing, for whatever reason, that may explain what you experience?

This does not fit together. If you have the campaign folder in the correct place as you describe, you must be able to see it in the pulldown. Period.
It's how the game works. There's nothing special about in BAT.

you could post a log though, maybe it's visible where the game's missing something
And please check what locale you have set in the conf.ini.  I suggest locale=us   (it's default for the .properties without any locale denomination)

[...] I made changes to the rank structure in the USMC because, by the time WW2 rolled around, there were fewer and fewer "Gunnery Sergeant" ranks flying [...]

Hmnn... does this mean you changed files in your country folders?

In the case of the "BIG USMC campaign - reworked for BAT WAW and JTW!" I am set into a Dynamic Campaign Generator starting in Wake.

What does this mean? The USMC Career is a static campaign. Mind you, there's a campaign for WAW and a campaign for JTW.

changing the contents in a rank.properties as he described is harmless. Deleting it however might be not....

all he gets offered in the pulldown - as he says - is a DGen campaign.

Thanks Vampire.

Then his campaign does not have the correct folder structure. This is what he should have:

Missions\Campaign\UM\USMCareerWAW\ ** lots of files here and no folders ***

and yet, he tells us differently:

actually, @Plowshare:

-Did you attempt to start the "*US Marine Corps" DGen campaign? Please do and tell me if it creates its own campaign folder inside UM.
-Do you maybe have multiple IL-2 installs and you are mixing them up? (adding the campaigns to one, while starting another install with a desktop launcher?)

And please check what locale you have set in the conf.ini.  I suggest locale=us   (it's default for the .properties without any locale denomination)[/b]

That did it!! In my conf.ini it showed "locale=" which should, as you suggest, default to "us". However, the moment I completed the line "locale=us" and fired up "Pilot Career">"Air Force" USMC>"Career" 'lo and behold there was, in the "Career" box, "USMC Career Campaign (part 1 WAW - 1943-1945)" and in the "Description" box was the write up.

Yes I did and and yes it was created.

I put a "rank.properties" file in the USAAF folder and everything is A-okay!!

Everything's now been sorted. Someone can mark this "Solved" with all my thanks to all involved.

Great to hear :D
Enjoy!

The idea was, that the game for some reason seemed to be unable to read the properties. Locale mixup was one shot.

I am playing this campaign and my conf.ini locale is empty (locale=). The locale thing might just not be the root cause of your issue. Glad you solved it, though.
