You are on the right way: mymap_c.tga is black and white.
You must continue iteratively:
make adjustion of mymap_c.tga, , restore map_c.tga and map_c.tga_table, observe in the map the effect and go back to mymap_tga adjustment.
There could be some smoothing effect in the map visible.
Continue until satisfied.

Ok.good..as to the scaled up image being blocky and alianized...if the coast outline was a bit smoother I could make finer adjustments..guess there is a setting to do this?

There is an instrument in GIMP - select the region on mymap_c.tga
you want and apply the gaussian filtering to it. Iteratively again.

After trying to alter the image in gimp....zooming in I get this??

Adjust the file mymap_c.tga by GIMP.

Ok..I'll read those tutorials. Not knowing what tool I  should use, I used the eraser tool to shave off and shape the coastline.
Guess I'm not saving or restoring the mymap_c.tga correctly.
