I think I found the airstrips Vamp was referring to.  They are in the Stationary Ships menu and are called Test Runway 1 through 6, with numbers 5 and 6 being the most useful for large fields.  I tried then tonight and they work well.  I have seen reference to these in past threads on this subject.  Some guys don't like using them because they say each one includes a takeoff/landing waypoint in the center, which can trick the AI into the wrong behavior in missions.  I don't know anything about that, I haven't tried building a mission for any AI planes with them yet.  For now, I'm just happy with all my airfields usable.
