Scripted Inflight Messages
« on: September 28, 2019, 03:21:48 PM »

This might be a weird question, but I'm asking because I can't recall ever seeing one...

Is it not possible to have scripted inflight radio messages in Il-2 1946? For example, you reach a waypoint in an escort mission and this triggers a pre-written (by the mission designer) radio message, such as:

"Nice of you to finally join us, Red Leader. You took your sweet time getting here." etc.

Or a message when you've destroyed a specific target, or at a certain point in a mission when the parameters suddenly change ("The carrier is under attack! Return immediately!") These messages could potentially be voiced, but even a simple text message would add flavor. I've been thinking of designing my own missions, but I'm not sure how powerful the mission editor is. Perhaps I've just been looking at the wrong campaigns...

The editor on its own can't do this, but it would be a nice addition at some point in the future.

This, and some way to set the type of bomb drop in a ground attack that the AI performs (single vs salvo and stuff like that).

That is a real shame. It seems like it would be a very simple way of adding a lot of immersion and storytelling potential to missions and campaigns. Aside from that, you would also be able to tell players more about what's happening in the mission such as "Good work! We have destroyed half the convoy. Keep it up!" and various other updates.

I have no idea how difficult it would be to add support for something like this, though. It seems like it would be relatively trivial to add scripted text messages at certain points in a mission, but since it hasn't been done, it's probably not. If support was added, I would certainly be willing to go through some existing campaigns and add radio messages where appropriate.

Something similar was implemented in HSFX. Mod "Triggers".
Link for user manual.

This seems to be just what I was after! Would make it possible to produce some very interesting story-based missions.

But I'm guessing this was only for HSFX? Would it be compatible with BAT?

No, I don't think so.

Is there a chance we could get more HSFX features in BAT?

unless a java modder of the highest caliber sets their mind to it and locks themselves in for a couple of months, I'd say no.

There is a reason this hasn't happened over the last years.

Well, dang. It seems like that would be perfect for simulating beach landings. Landing craft arrive at a beach, are removed from the map and replaced with their stationary counterparts, and then trigger the land forces to spawn in and advance on the enemy.

And procedural objectives! "Protect the landing craft," landing craft reach destination, objective erased and replaced with "protect the land forces."

It seems like this would be the perfect reason for some of those who are waiting for triggers to reappear in BAT so eagerly, to start learning some IL-2 Java modding themselves.
Seriously, you'd either have to do it yourself, or sit back, relax and wait for the small chance to see a modder stepping by who just doesn't have anything better to do.

It would probably be a longshot, but do you think there is a chance that the people behind this triggers mod (LAL_Catsy seems to have made it, with some others helping to write the manual) could be convinced to add it to BAT? Are they still active in the Il-2 community?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but HSFX doesn't seem to be in active development at present. It also doesn't look like this triggers mod was used in a lot of missions, even though substantial effort must have gone into it. Since BAT is where most Il-2 1946 mission development takes place now, perhaps Catsy would be willing to add support for the triggers mod. Of course, I have no idea how much work it would be - perhaps it's relatively simple and straightforward to carry it over from HSFX to BAT, or perhaps it is not. I will be the first to admit that I am utterly ignorant in this area... but if there is even a chance...
