Lovely old aircraft. I once spent some time with a 90plus year old who used to fly Heracles. Among the stories he told me were the way they had to fly up and down the English Channel until the clouds or fog cleared, often flying under the clouds up the valley to Croydon airport. The passengers were usually diplomats or film stars as they were the only ones that could afford to fly. The weight limit was very strict. One actress was told either her 40 cases could go or her but not both! And that was just from England to France.
One time they were flying over the Sahara desert and had to land on a sand dune to fix a faulty engine. While the pilot and engineer worked on the plane the steward laid out a table and parasol for the passengers and served champagne and caviar. The aircraft seats were more like string hammocks and so swayed a lot during flight. Sick bags were provided as essential. In those days of Empire help was never far away but so was danger. Some of the stop off stations for refuelling were only a tent in a flat piece of ground with a lone civilian in charge, usually grumpy for having his peace disturbed, very primitive.
