Polish Steam Locomotive Pm36-1Very rarely I write such requests, usually they concern aircraft, but this beautiful locomotive did not let me forget about "la belle polonaise"
; from time to time I found her photos or articles on the Internet, I hesitated to write this request but in the end I came to the conclusion that even in the case when no one will take up its implementation, the Pm-36-1 locomotive deserves for 5 minutes of attention.
The aerodynamic silhouette of the Pm36-1 steam locomotive made a furore at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937. The steam locomotive jokingly called "la belle polonaise". (beautiful Polish woman) returned to Poland with a gold medal. Pm36-1 is the first example of the use of aerodynamic shapes in the history of Polish railways. Unfortunately, the outbreak of World War II thwarted the plans to implement a locomotive for serial production.
In the 1930s, the leading steam engine manufacturing plants began to use aerodynamic lines in fast steam locomotives. The air resistance, which was not taken into account at lower speeds, took a lot of power from the steam locomotives at higher speeds, as it increases proportionally to the square of speed. In order to express the aspirations of the designers, the Locomotive Factory in Chrzanów produced an aerodynamic shaped steam locomotive. The shape of the steam locomotive was determined on the basis of research conducted at the Aerodynamic Institute of Warsaw University of Technology in cooperation with professors Xiężopolski (construction) and Zembrzyski (aerodynamic shapes).
As a result of the research carried out in the wind tunnel, the air resistance was reduced by 48% by using an aerodynamic lagging, smoothing its surface and rounding its edges so that the air gently glides (flows around) the steam locomotive. The Tender was also completely covered with lagging, with harmony at the back in order to join the first wagon and thus remove harmful air whirlpools, which are usually created behind the trend. The Tender type 32D 36, for collecting water, has side flaps on both sides that open outwards from the driver's booth. The coal is loaded through a hole in the upper part of the trend, which is closed with a sliding flap. At the back of the bend there is a fixed ladder allowing access to the roof. Connection of the steam locomotive to the bias by means of a main coupling and two spare couplings with a spring device. Inside the trend there is a previously unknown coal displacement system.
In order to allow access to the individual parts covered by the lagging, there are flaps which, when opened, were completely comfortable to access. The access to the smoke chamber is possible when the two halves of the semi-circular lagging are tilted sideways, with hinges at the front. Large blanks in the 80 mm thick beam band reduce its weight and give a clear view of all mechanisms.
The rod of the adjuster to maintain its aerodynamic shape was carried out under the deck of the steam locomotive.
The Pm-36 series hasty steam locomotive (aerodynamic version) is the pinnacle of Polish design thought in the railway technology of the interwar years, as evidenced by the gold medal awarded to Poland for this steam locomotive in 1937 at the International Exhibition of Art and Technology in Paris.
