DOF Transport Columns Full Rework
« on: November 07, 2019, 02:59:36 AM »

Further to my horse-drawn transport mod for DOF, I have now completely re-worked all the transport columns. Hopefully the units are now much more applicable to the period, and it should be easier to select a suitable unit as the individual column names are more obvious. It should also make compiling a large column from several smaller ones simpler. There are only two motorised supply columns per side: ‘short’ and ‘long’.

A word on Ack Ack. I have removed all Ack Ack units from the columns for two reasons.

Firstly, it is ahistorical – there was no mobile Ack Ack in the Great War. You will see Ack Ack mounted on trucks, but they were only used statically. So if you wish to add Ack Ack to your mission do as the commanders at the time did – place static units to protect the route as opposed to the column itself.

Secondly, the only vehicle Ack Ack is delivered by armoured cars. When they fire at an aircraft they halt, which is accurate (unlike their gunners, fortunately). However when an armoured car stops it really affects the movement AI, causing all sorts of havoc and collisions in your column. My advice would be to avoid using armoured car units in large combined columns at all – they are really intended for small independent forces.

Note: the cavalry squadron columns (e.g. BritishCavSQN, FrenchCavSQNCharge) contain one armoured car each.

Although most column names should be self-evident, to clarify the use of the ‘tank attack’ columns (e.g. TankAttackMkIV). These have not really been designed to act as a part of a road column, but to create assault units. Place four of them side-by-side to achieve the following effect:

I hope you like the new columns. If you come across any problems with their use please get back to me and I will see if changes can be made. I do intend to take a similar look at TGA and WAW in the future.

Yours, Clive

As before, I have set this up with a folder which can be enabled from BATMODS, which avoids any unwanted changes to the original ‘chief.ini’ file. Simply copy the ‘DOF Transport Columns Rework’ folder into BATMODS and enable as required.
