The Sea Eagles - Trägergruppe 186
« on: November 10, 2019, 01:57:24 PM »

This is an 8 mission alternate history campaign that has you joining Trägergruppe 186 on the Graf Zeppelin, flying the fictional Ar 196T-1 torpedo bomber. It is the summer of 1942 and the Kriegsmarine is preparing Operation Regenübung, a major sortie into the North Atlantic by the Graf Zeppelin and its task force, which includes the battleship Tirpitz. Will they fare better than the Bismarck did one year earlier?

Special thanks to:
  • SAS~Sani, The Radge, and everyone else involved in the making of the Ar 196T-1
  • Everyone involved in making any of the assets that are used in this campaign
  • The B.A.T. team and everyone else who has contributed to this great mod

If I can find the time, I would like to eventually continue this alternate history scenario with two additional 8 mission campaigns, which would see you transition through each of Trägergruppe 186's three staffeln, flying the Ju-87C and the Bf 109T. Should I get around to doing that, you may consider this Chapter 1 of The Sea Eagles campaign. :)

Massive Allied convoys are crossing the Atlantic, and the U-Boats can't stop enough of them on their own. It's time for the surface fleet, along with its Luftwaffe air component, to do its part!

TIMELINE

1939

September
World War II breaks out in Europe. Despite voices within the Kriegsmarine calling for the suspension of all work on Germany's two aircraft carriers in favor of U-Boat production, construction of Flugzeugträger A and B continues as planned.

1940

December
After a lengthy conference with his senior generals, Hitler grudgingly agrees to abandon all plans of invading the Soviet Union until the war against Britain has been completely decided in Germany's favor. Operation Barbarossa is postponed indefinitely.

The Luftwaffe prepares to resume the Blitz and additional resources are allocated to the Kriegsmarine for the purpose of eventually building a surface fleet capable of challenging the Royal Navy. The construction of two additional carriers, Flugzeugträger C and D, is ordered.

1941

April
While Axis forces invade Yugoslavia and Greece, Germany's first carrier, the Graf Zeppelin, is commissioned into the fleet and begins sea trials in the Baltic Sea. Work continues in Kiel on her sister ship, the Peter Strasser.

May
With German and Bulgarian forces massing in Thrace, Turkey accedes to the passage of a German expeditionary force through its territory, ostensibly in response to a request for military assistance from the new government of Iraq. Fallschirmjägers seize Damascus as the first German units cross into Syria. The Vichy French garrison offers no resistance and additional German reinforcements are rapidly flown in, while Commonwealth forces scramble to form a new frontline in Palestine.

November
The furious air war over Britain is well into its second year when the British launch Operation Crusader in Libya. Despite initial gains, the frontlines eventually stabilize near Gazala. Additional Luftwaffe units are diverted to the Mediterranean and North African theaters, giving some much needed respite to the beleaguered Royal Air Force units defending Britain.

December
The Empire of Japan launches a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the main base of the United States Pacific Fleet. Germany ultimately refrains from declaring war on America, and the Pacific War becomes a separate conflict linked to the one in Europe only by the participation of Britain in both wars. The undeclared war waged by the US Navy against the Kriegsmarine in the Atlantic continues, albeit in a more limited fashion as many American ships are moved to the Pacific theater.

1942

May - Present Day
The Oberkommando der Marine orders the Graf Zeppelin to Norway, where she is to rendezvouz with the rest of her task force in preparation for the upcoming Operation Regenübung - the next great foray into the North Atlantic by the German surface fleet!

This looks great. I hope in future campaigns, you will use the Fw-190T fighters that also double as attack aircraft.

Cool! I have a few unfinished German carrier missions sitting around... maybe this motivates me to look at them again.

so i'm a new guy around here and this is one of the first campaigns i downloaded, i'm liking it very much, the attention to detail and the brifings really get you invested in this.

i'd like to make a segestion thougth. maybe it's only because i don't understand how to use it but it seems to me that there's no real way for navigating at sea on this aircraft, nor does the graf zepelin seem to have a becon or any sort of system to help find it. it's even worse at night as the carrier simply refuses to turn on any lights and landing at the evening is very hard to do. perhaps if we can't get the carrier to turn a light on and we don't have a landing light to at least get some illumination then it's better to avoid night-ops (couple of the landings happen in the evening), i'd really like for it to be possibole as i love night ops but with no sort of help it's almost impossibole.

anywas i really enjoyed this campaign and i'll be anxiously waiting the next ones

You should be able to simply follow the waypoints on your navigation map to the carrier. There is sadly no way to illuminate the carrier during night operations, which in any case was considered very risky in an active war zone. I believe you can also ask for a vector to your home base with your radio, although I haven't tested this myself.

Unfortunately, I have decided to shelve any future Il-2 mission building projects for the time being. This campaign was not received particularly well - after 140 downloads at Mission4Today, it has not even received a rating, much less any reviews, good or bad. For all I know, you are the only person who has actually played through it, aside from myself. I am glad you enjoyed it, but I have to conclude that either people weren't interested in the alternate history subject, or my execution was lacking. I probably spent way too much effort on the briefings for a simple 8 mission campaign - maybe those walls of text made people reluctant to move past the first few missions.

Still, I enjoyed making the campaign and I am glad that you, at least, enjoyed it. :)

Are you kidding me? the brifings are awsome, they give it life, i especially love the idea of the rivalry between the sailors and the airman.

As for the execuation: the missions do get a bit repetetiv, but that's the nature of torpedo bombing i think, luckliy we also get to dogfight a bit...
I also seem to be suffering from a lot of dud torpedos... they seem to make it all the way to the target and then just not explode... maybe i'm just bad...

As for carrier lights, like i said even when i find the carrier i can't land if i can't see... if it's a dark night and bad weather and you don't have any lights on the carrier pr any instruments to help with the landing i doubt they would even do any sort of night ops in those conditions...

really sad to hear that we won't see any more of this, was really looking forward to the rest, i live the luft' 46 and alt history stuff... this has to be one of my very favorite campgains (granted i haven't played too many of them yet but still...) because it combines that with good story telling and good usage of the weather and daytime to create realy nice visuals, as well as keeps you on your toes with some more challenging missions. other the minor things i mentioned the only issue i have with it is it's shorter then i'd like...

Wow, very nice.  It is this kind of work that makes it impossible to kill this Flight Sim.

Man, super well done!!  The narration is great.  I just played the first 2 missions in VR Mode and these are great missions.  This was the first time I used VR for a carrier mission, so it was awesome to be able to stick my head outside the cockpit for better view and then seeing the folding wings from a 1st person perspective.
