Royal Navy FAA is completely unrealistic
« on: November 26, 2019, 04:43:28 AM »

I've switched back to the old Il2 1946 as it's the only sim that includes the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm of WWII. I was sad to discover that although plane models are superb, they lack their own cockpits - they use US dive bomber ones instead, with American avionics. Swordfish looks alright, although more dated as it's clearly been made a long time ago. Why not use it as a base for other cockpits? Avionics and their placement are very, very similar. The US cockpit with UK avionics and a different canopy would work so much better.

Here's an example of Albacore's cockpit:

Canopy is also badly represented in FAA planes, offering way too much visibility to the sides. Particularly with Albacore.

Using American cockpits is a very bizarre decision and it ruins the immersion completely.

Another grievance would be their very bizarre flight models - both Albacore and Swordfish, clunky and heavy planes in real life, can perform unrealistic maneuvers, almost like a fighter.

Overall, I hope that FAA will see more love, especially considering that they were found on almost every WWII front.

I dont understand your logic of “switching back to old IL2 1946”. There is nothing in “old IL2” which is not in the 4.12 based mod packs. What is there to gain by switching back? You are correct that some models would benefit from an authentically modelled cockpit rather than a stand in, however until a modeller picks up the challenge having a stand in is better than nothing, orlimiting the aircraft to AI only. Modelling cockpits are a lot of work, as much as making the aircraft itself. The Skua which I did some work on, to date has a properly modelled rear gunner position but only a stand in pilot position. Better that it is released as is for people to use than to languish on a hard drive. Of course no one is forced to use it, but they do have a choice.

Sigh

I'm loath to get involved in this discussion but I have to agree with asheshouse.....before you "switch back to old IL2"  you might want to peruse these two threads from the site that specialises in the original IL2.....

http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=4835&finish=15&start=15

Check out what's on this list + the length of the list + the dates of the list....then checkout the list of aircraft in BAT now

As a person whose main interest is 1904 to 1920's I find the comment "I always wished for WWI aircraft and maps for IL-2. But I doubt that will ever happen" particularly sad

The last time I looked there were over 180 aircraft available flying over 12 dedicated maps

If I were FAA I would try to forget the fine detail and immerse myself in the immensity and glory that is BAT  :P

Cheers

La critique est facile, l'art est difficile !  :P
If all those who whine for one reason or another went to buy a trowel, a hammer and a burglar, we would have an IL-2 that would make all the Olympian Gods jealous!
If what the modellers offer you for free is fine with you... perfect!
They don't make you say thank you!
If that doesn't suit you... it's the same price... free!
There are cockpits that I don't like, in which case I turn the plane into an "AI only".
Because I have trouble flying nearly 2000 planes at the same time!

Of course, there is nothing to prevent you from making a request...
But I must admit that you don't have the "right style" to make a request.
So I have no desire to start thinking about your requests.

FAA in il2 world is nicely covered. We have so many planes, core carriers, many maps grizzlions skins and aid beacons which is not primary FAA one, but works wery wery well. Some cockpits are placeholders but I accept them. Newest Skua is dream come true for me. It was last piece of my favourite Ark Royal era (Ark, Fulmar, Swordfish, Skua). I really enjoy FAA in this sim. Same for any others carrier operations in this game.
