I only half agree. Light vessels are generally more useful. After all, there were many more of them in real life. However if you are recreating a fleet formation for a historical scenario the major ships need to be visually authentic, whereas the substitution of near matches for the escort vessels does not greatly affect the overall appearance. There are still a few major vessels missing.
U came to the conclusion that I wanted to talk about. For example, imagine the Battle of Samar without the IJN heavy weights? Or the Operation Ten-go without the Yamato? No fun at all.
But my point is that these ships - again, destroyers and light cruisers - were more commonly found. Another example: take a look at the Solomons Campaign - most of the actions in the middle and towards the end of the campaign involved smaller ships, as seen in the operations of the Tokyo Express.
But tbh with u Ashe, as long we have a big shipyard in the il2 (and u are big contributor to it), I´m going to be happy! Thxs for all your effort
