B-52 - No defense weapons at all!?
« on: March 11, 2020, 10:19:33 AM »

I'm just testing one of my fave planes, the amazing B-52 and I realize that it does not have any guns (flares I guess it does have though!?) to protect itself from enemy aircraft!? Can someone confirm that and wouldn't that be an inspiration for modders to add that - I mean the rear position looks very promising to add a nice gun there. Well just another thought... maybe experts will tell me more. :)

B-52D/F have 4x 12.7mm guns

B-52H (Early) has 1x 20mm vulcan

B-52H (Late) is removed it as historical.

B-52D/F and Early H have a rear gunner:

B-52D/F = 4xBrowning M2 .50
B-52H Early = 1x20mm M61A1 Vulcan (radar-guided)

The Late H has no rear gunner but instead Flares & Chaff
I suggest to set crew experience to Ace for the Early H, to simulate the radar-guided rear gun. Beware tho! It's super deadly. ;)

Alright then! I had tried the 2001-Late version. That explains that of course.  :-[  Thx for all answers. :)

made the mistake of thinking the one with the Vulcan was an easy kill once, i went in for a guns kill then suddenly the back end lights up and 3000 rounds a min saw my wing off it was crazy effective

Still makes me wonder a bit that they removed that on the 2001- version - it is very effective - no doubt about it. But maybe we "veterans" are still in that ol' close combat-thinking of Bombers. Today almost everything is about rockets and more rockets. I kinda miss the old times of aviation... :(

Today almost everything is about rockets and more rockets.
Missiles actually (https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/185955/what-is-the-difference-between-a-rocket-and-a-missile).
And that's where the M61's effectivity ends, hence it became obsolete.

when you have an active radar missile that has a range of 50 miles or more a gun is useless

Even if it's "just" an infrared one with 5 miles range, your tail gun is wasted weight.
Mind you: Modern missiles are "all aspect"...
