Got it to run, or better said, got it to slide as the first mission is a slideshow on my rig...

Yes, the campaign is quite heavy, I would suggest not to use full squadron density. "Dense" runs pretty well on my rig (AMD FX-4350, AMD Radeon R7 360, 8 GB).

The first mission almost always runs slower than the rest of the campaign - not sure why.

Ah thank you for the suggestion, will try that.
My rig is a bit older with an i7 3770i CPU and an Asus gtx 680 oc GPU with 4mb and I think the bottleneck is the GPU here as I had the paratrooper mesh error for the first time in 10 years when I fired up the first mission...
Will report back after trying another squadron setting...

I tried this now and my decent PC cannot handle it at all. o_O Would be interesting to know what others experience. I appreciate the effort a lot but sadly I cannot even really try - it's just a slideshow for me - and my PC is decent and actually should handle it (same CPU like you btw.).  :(

Decreasing the number of airplane makes the campaign (or any campaign) significantly faster.

Try lowering Squadron density (number of active squadrons in a mission) and/or Maximum Flights per squadron (number of flights each squadron will fly with). Massed Bombers also affects as if ticked, all bomber squadrons will fly with 4 flights.

I have played this campaign through with Squadron Density as Dense and Maximum Flights per squadron as One, Massed Bombers off. No problem with slow gameplay.

In this campaign the first two missions are super heavy because of heavy fighting on the beaches, so decreasing Stationary Object Density for the first two missions will also help a lot.
