I also have a soft spot for the David vs Goliath struggle of Finland. They are the only ones that have actually fought the Red Army to a stand-still. So here comes a campaign pack for the Winter War 1939-40, perheaps the most heroic episode of them all:
Included in this pack are FOUR 14 mission long static campaigns that portray the aerial fighting on the Finnish side during the Winter War 1939-40. These are for the following aircraft
• The Fokker D.XXI
• The Bristol Bulldog + Morane Saulnier MS.406
• The Bristol Bulldog + Fiat G.50
• The Bristol Bulldog + Gloster Gladiator
These are all fighter campaigns. In all Bristol Bulldog campaigns you start with that older type, but switch to the more modern aircraft (MS.406 etc) at a later date in 1940, all according to when that particular type was actually introduced. (The MS.406, the G.50 and the Gladiator was all used by the Finns but only in the later stages of the war.)
You can download it here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=1991All missions make extensive use of Checkyersix’s GREAT Command & Control Mod with a number of randomizers, which means that the composition of the opposition will vary, even if you replay the same mission twice.
Historical Background: The Winter War began with the Soviet Union invading Finland on 30 November 1939, principally to gain substantial border territories. At first the Soviet Union established a Communist puppet government for Finland, and clearly intended to conquer the entire country. It looked like a push-over. The Russians possessed more than three times as many soldiers as the Finns, thirty times as many aircraft, and a hundred times as many tanks, but for several month Finland repelled Soviet attacks, to the surprise of the world, and much longer than the Soviets expected. The Red Army suffered huge casualties. After reorganization, reinforcements and adoption of different tactics, the sheer weight of Soviet forces finally overcame the Finnish defenses at the borders, and Finland was forced to sue for peace.
Shiny screenies will follow eventually.
