Setting Waypoints

Hi Guys
Is it common to have trouble setting waypoints? Doesnt seem to matter how often I press ctrl+L click nothing seems to happen? occassionally it seems to work but it feels like luck more than judgement?. I can get 2 too work sometimes but never a third? Am I doing something wrong?

User error I didnt ensure my aircraft icon was flashing prior to seeting the waypoint
