Or you could elect to have your desert maps populated by coconut palms. As I do, at least up to now...

... you mean next step is new desert date palm trees ...?  8)

I gave your nice mod a try, for desert maps, since I mainly fly in the MTO and never in the PTO (too much water, too many sharks ...  :P) and although the visual result is better, I found it unfit, not only because these are coconut palm trees instead of date ones, but also because the green of the foliage is too dark ...  :-X

So I tried to change the green, make it less dark, but the prog I used, Faststone Image Viewer, probably deletes an alpha layer or something, in the process, so the result is very cartoonish and totally unusable ...  :-[

Mick,
Can you post a small screen grab of something that shows the general hue and tone you want? I could then use this to make up a set of textures more or less matching it. Just for you! ;)

Have you looked into GIMP? It's free, and handles alpha channels. I use a free version of an older Photoshop.

Mick,
You're picture are great but pay attention to the balance of white. Not sure that the pictures above really are in true colors. May be retouched or simply not corrected according to the balance of white.
They seem very yellowish to me.

The 'special' set of lighter textures I whipped up have only had a brightening; I imposed no color cast change. I also felt that Mick's first picture might have been a bit on the yellow side. The second pic was, by comparison, less saturated. All of which led me to just deal with brightness.

... many THX for the lighter set of textures, will give them a try tomorrow (it's past midnight here in France) ...  ;)

I didn' edit the two pics I posted, just googled "palmeraie désert", and picked 2 relevant ones ...  ;)

May be you think the first one is too yellowish because it's got several dying/drying "leaves", that turned yellow/brown ...?  ;)

Mick,
Heh, I was pretty sure those 2 pics were simply snatched off the interwebs. ;) The yellower aspect of the first comes in part from the obvious somewhat low angle of the Sun.

I forgot to mention that in addition to the brightening of the textures, I did somewhat reduce the color saturation. If they could use more treatment, alter to your taste and tell me what you did. As in brightening or dimming by some amount, or making yellower or bluer, or stronger or weaker color saturation, etc. In other words, hue, saturation and lightness (HSL.)

... OK, I tested your new less dark textures and the result is, at least according to me, much better for the MTO, the only thing missing being the yellow/brown dying/drying leaves ...  ;)

So I asked my local judge for a search warrant, and took a look deep inside my Mods folder, and found 4 Palm folders, that must have been growing in there for years without my consent ...!  :P

So gave them a try and here is the result:

1) your new (with shadows) textures (in the front):

2) other palms textures with a few yellow/brown leaves:

3) another model with less dark leaves tips:

Note the different trunks in each example ....

If anybody is interested in growing palm trees, I can upload all my Palm folders at Mediafire ...  8)

;D    I join Mick in this attempt to get date palms for the North African theater. It would be nice to have, together with those fantastic coconut palms that you have greatly improved, a series of date palms with the largest stems a little less leaves, but always well defined, the most yellow color typical of arid vegetation, perhaps in groups of palm trees doubled or tripled compared to the standard models .. what do you say? Do you think it would be possible?   ;)

Mick,
Please do upload your little collection. For one thing, I kind of like one of the trunk textures. And I might use a foliage part to make a matching new fronds texture.

Stanislao,
I'll look at the stock meshes for the date palms. It should be no real difference in making up a fuller version of that one...
