How come the trunk base is that clear ...?  o_O

At first I thought this could be a lime treatment against parasites, but couldn't find a single pic confirming that kind of treatment for date palms ...  :-X

But I just discovered something not good. The Egypt palms appear to be made so as to depend on the .mat file parameter tfDoubleSide 1. The mesh viewer utility *does* show single-sided objects as being textured on the other side if tfDoubleSide is enabled.

But the game doesn't recognize this. If you want a sheet-like object to have a texture on both sides, you must create the extra polygons, which of course doubles the number of them.

I was wondering why these new palm seemed to get harder to see in the distance than I had expected. Now I know why. If you only ever look at these palms from well above, things are OK. But looking at them from the side--and especially from below!--the fronds partly or entirely disappear. Not good.

I'm not sure if I want to make up the extra polygons; there are already 1733 polygons among all 5 LODs. Perhaps if I removed one of the LODs (the 2nd most detailed one might be the better victim)?  While the process merely requires to duplicate the existing vertices and reverse the order in which each triplet makes up a triangular polygon, it's still a bit of work to undertake. (And the grind of the second palm group still awaits!)

I'm now wondering if my existing tree model, clothed in the new lighter texture, might just suffice well enough...

If it's deemed good enough, I can specify different texture names in the desert meshes so that BOTH the coconut and the date liveries are always available. This can be done lickety split.

About the tfDoubleSide 1 glitch, don't you worry too much, as there ain't any pilot, even Ace, capable of flying under palm trees, even under 300 km/h ...!  :P

The 'original' bushy palms mod, desert style. No shadows version.

Now both the pacific coconut and the desert 'date' types are always available. Each type has its own dedicated .tga's.

If a map has the wrong type present, there will be a discordance. But at least it won't be as glaring as before.

I did load up a number of pacific maps that I seem to recall seeing the ugly date palms present on in days of yore. So far I haven't found any examples, strangely enough... I wonder if at some point folk had addressed this and put the right palms into the actors.static files where needed. Oh well, a deeper look might turn some up. If there are no longer any such oddities, that would be marvelous.

 :D ;DHere we are ! Colors are the right ones! I really ask too much .. if you could have both options in Static to add in the Palms sector, leaving your palms bright green as basic, they are too beautiful! Adding in the scenery then the date palms together with the others for example, so everyone is free to choose without having to overwrite the files ..... Grazie !    ;)

Top post updated and cleaned up. Just one version to 'choose' from now. ;) Contains both the pacific and desert palms, with or without shadows. Install and essentially forget, because the right tree goes with its map. Provided the map maker has been paying attention, and unless there are some odd inclusions still hanging about, like desert palms on pacific maps. But at least such differences are not so shocking now.

Heh. I just found a bunch of pacific palms on the MTO map. So there are discordances like this to be found. It's been so many years that I've used my early mod that turned the desert palms all to pacific that I had forgotten the specifics of what oddities were found where.

Anyway, better a pacific palm on a desert map than the other way round--with the ghastly way the old desert palms were made! ;)
