Operation Vengeance Info needed.
« on: April 22, 2020, 10:20:58 AM »

Hi Guys ,

I am hoping someone out there has the information I seek.
I am looking for the correct Tactical numbers and the pilots who flew them for the 204th Kokutai Zeros who escorted Admiral I. Yamamoto when he was shot down by P38s of the 339th FS out of Cactus April 18 1943. (Operation Vengeance)

I have the Pilot names , and I have the Aircraft numbers , but other than F 1/C K. Yanagiya , I don't know which pilot flew which A6M. The resolution of the above pic is too low for me to read the pilot names , and in any case my Japanese is non-existent.
If you have this info , I'd also like the reference from which you got the information , so it can be
verified.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Kopf

We flew this mission online few years ago. I made some research. I forgot most informations, but found topic about mission. It is in slovak and czech language, but you can read names.

Standard info on wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenji_Yanagiya

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=3067
http://www.missio...mp;t=16432
http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/aerialcampaigns/p/operation-vengeance.htm

Topic where we discussed about mission. You can find some more links and vids there: http://acesovereurope.org/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=501

Mission thread where pilots signed in. There are some screenies from mission. And on last page is ingame lightning guncam from mission: http://acesovereurope.org/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=502

There are some skins around. Some where edited, other where new. I can upload some if you want.

I have more info maybe but I am not on my pc now

As I said , I have seen much of this info before , but thank you to all who are trying to help me.
The last link by Knochenlutscher has the information that I desire , but I cannot read the Japanese.
Is there anyone reading this who can look at the last link , translate the Japanese , and post which
IJN Pilot flew which A6M ?

Thanks

Kopfdorfer

PS      As an aside , is there anyone out there who can detail what information is on the rectangular
panel on the fuselage side towards the tail of the A6Ms.

Kopfdorfer,

According to the image provided:

Tail Code: Pilot (Family Name, First name)

T2-147: Hidaka Yoshimi

T2-151: Morisaki Takeshi

T2-169: Yanagiya Kenji https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenji_Yanagiya

T2-165: Sugita Shoichi https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%9D%89%E7%94%B0%E5%BA%84%E4%B8%80

T2-171: Tsujinogami Toyomitsu

T2-117: Okazaki Yasushi

You may also want to google translate this page: https://gendai.ismedia.jp/articles/-/55288?page=3

There are more stories for these pilots.  Name translations in the article are a bit inconsistent, and I'd also defer to those who're more knowledgeable in Japanese to correct the names above.

Cheers,

That is the Serial Number It was a sort of stenciled.

Black on grey primer and white on solid green. Sometimes these got covered when overpainted in field.

A Zero Serial

Mongo Zero of 204 Kokutai Wreck

a Zero in early Delivery Scheme of 204 Kokutai

Knoch… for the life of me, I can't remember, specifically, what that item is...I used to know...  If you check out IL-2 MAT Manager...it puts them on the default Japanese skins.  It's like a serial number, oil...or some balderdash as that.  That's what it is.  Prost

It was a secondary Serial Info on fuselage side, large letters for halfblind Groundcrewmen
No Gubi, definitely not every Zero had dashed Stenciled, lookie lookie here, a sprayed example of the same Type.

The 1st Serial Plaque inside the Zero looked like this:

Thanks Knoch ,

I suspected as much.
Has any skinner made a sort of generic plate that is available and
can be put on any A6M ?
I use 1024 x 1024 so resolution does not need to be legible - in fact
it is useful if it is not.
I work with 500 mph impressionism , not HD stop and look at the
image precision.

The area of the Skin for that is 34x23 pixel, not a great Margin on 1024x1024.

Nevertheless here's my Research stuff I used for my Zero Skins; valuable Info.
http://www.j-aircraft.com/research/otherres.htm

The Zero Fuselage Identification Stencil

http://www.j-aircraft.com/research/ryan/zero_fuselage_identification_ste.htm

A6M2 and A6M3 Secondary Markings
A series of other locations occured where even subassembly Plates, markings where found, Elevetators, Ailerons,
http://www.j-aircraft.com/research/ryan/a6m2_and_a6m3_secondary_markings.htm

Data Plate below Cockpit with Translations

As a Zero Skinner I can recommend Emels Pack, it's well crafted and I found suitingly well
done for every sub type. Older Templates (Revolver and Co.) lack the details and fine crafting.
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=40188.0

I planned a replica r/l Stencil to be made for my Living Room Wall. As I have fun cutting such stuff,
since I got in contact with ex-NVA-LSK Personell.
I will make a vector Graphic Version that I can use for the print Prototype. First I need a Custom Skin for the Numbering, then search a suitable Jap font and
start the Puzzling. Best ideas come while discussing such things.
