Westland Lysander in the Finnish Gulf.
« on: May 26, 2020, 02:47:47 PM »

Hello guys, following the recent update I did to the undercarriage of my Lysander I finally got
around to making some coded skins for the Finnish version I originally built it to represent. ;)

Mediafire link:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/emutzrbgivzeqhr/Westland_Lysander_skins_Finnish_Gulf.7z/file

Please note some of the Green/brown scheme coded skins that shipped with the Lysander update
have now been updated after better information came to light and they can be deleted before adding
this selection if you wish, all those coded aircraft used the A scheme and had incomplete markings,
these have been rectified to use the B scheme.  Uncoded skins can be retained.
;)

During 1940 Finland received twelve of a original seventeen aircraft order for the Westland Lysander Mk.I.

Nine were shipped and would be assembled in Sweden with three making the flight from the U.K., of the
three making the flight LY-123 and LY-125 arrived in Finland on March 8th 1940, LY-124 was damaged in transit
and as far as I know never made it into Air Force service.
The nine assembled in Sweden eventually arrived on May 3rd 1940 and carried the codes LY-114, 115, 116, 117,
118, 119, 120, 121, and 123.  These were all from R.A.F stocks.

LY-114, 117, 121 and 125 would all be lost on operations, a further two aircraft were also lost to what was termed
other causes during winter time, LY-121 was responsible for the shooting down of a I-16.

They would remain in service through the war, the last was struck off in 1945.

The government of Estonia had ordered twelve aircraft prior to WWII, however, this order was transferred to the
R.A.F. and like other British aircraft would never arrive in the country.  Rumours persist that various British aircraft
were completed and even had their new codes and insignia applied during test flying in the U.K. and the Estonian
aircraft featured here are based on a decal sheet released some time ago that provided two of those possible schemes
for the Lysander that I have replicated here.

The collection of Finnish coded aircraft is incomplete as information for some of the aircraft has not
been forthcoming and in some instances a certain artistic licence was exercised due to mapping issues
on the model as well as shortcomings in the quality of some images available. :D

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hello guys, glad you like the skins, thank you very much, really appreciated. 8)

Sadly not all of the Finnish aircraft are there as I would have liked, however, I think there is enough variety included that
covers the schemes used by them, along with the various blank and insignia only it should do and I can always update the
pack if further information becomes available. ;)

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Glad you like the skins guys, really appreciated. 8)

My model of the Lysander is not the best piece of 3d so there are a few issues with the mapping but I tried as best I could to create enough variety for potential mission/campaign use and managed to find a reasonable selection of photographs and codes although in certain instances a little artistic licence was necessary. ;)

Not a great deal is written about the Lysander in Finnish service, it would of course have done the usual army cooperation roles but there are hints in some literature that due to its unique attributes it was heavily involved in supporting Finnish Ranger units (Commando/special ops forces) in the field, in many respects that reflects British use for cross channel special operations in occupied Europe so it could provide some interesting game play.

Take care and be safe.

Pete,
English and Finnish skins are especially good! (No offense from Estonians)
 The Lysander is superb.

I think you are mired in Thornycroft's guts ;D
..... Forgot about new planes

Unfortunately ill health is a issue, I have damage in tendons/biceps and nerve entrapment as well as C spine problems so I am
in pain most of the time to some degree or other so I can only spend very short periods, 30/45 minutes at a time tinkering
before the pain becomes too much to carry on and I have to put things aside. :(

Before the condition I was able to have all manner of projects on the go, sadly now I have to limit what I do and so have
made the Thorneycroft my main outlet.  Aircraft are very involved and even when you intend to just do a slot you always
become more involved in the remainder, cockpits in all their variety, shadows, damage, templates et al, constant testing and
it just becomes too frustrating trying to get a project progressing so I now try and avoid doing anything much more than the
truck and that has been in work over a year. :o

I do occasionally pick up on other things but that usually means leaving the Thorneycroft for a time as I cannot manage to work
two projects together so it has to be something I am especially interested in or where members are particularly stuck with projects
and just cannot move forward without help for me to now get involved in them now unfortunately. ::(

My work always involved using my hands and arms, I feel crippled in many respects now but do try and keep my hand in so to speak so
I do not forget how to do these things. :D

Take care and be safe.
