New to BAT- do these missions exist?
« on: June 27, 2020, 08:54:28 AM »

Hello all:

Longtime flight simmer here, but somehow I managed never to discuss the wealth of mods availabe for IL-2 1946 until yesterday (!). I'm downloading all kinds of cool stuff left and right now, very excited! Understandably however I'm finding it a bit overwhelming, and while I'm slowly starting to become comfortable with the difference between BAT and UP3, how do i install missions etc.... but I'm still drowning in information and trying to sort it all out.

In particular, I've been trying to find missio s/campaigns- there are a lot of aircraft to be sure, but i want to find some missions to fly them in! Specifically, are there are any single missions or campaigns(doesn't necessarily have to be BAT I suppose) for:

1) Any kind of heavy US or Soviet bomber (so B-17/29/36/47/52, Tu-4/22/95? I've found the planes but very few missions
2) Anything involving nuclear weapons? I see some videos on YouTube but they're very old and don't seem to be tied to anything I can easily use now.
3) Any "Cold War goes hot" scenarios in Europe or the North Atlantic? I found one ancient campaign for this on Mission4today but that's it?
4) Anything involving the TBD Devastator/TBM Avenger? I understand there was some sort of legal kerfuffle surrounding this when the game came out, but surely its been modded in subsequently?
5) Aircraft-wise, is there an A-5 Vigilante or Tu-22M Backfire anywhere?

Thanks so much! Sorry if these are a lot of dumb or obvious questions or this is the wrong forum for them.

Hi CaptainKoloth
Regarding the Cold War there should be some campigns here or some missions in that time period. If not, i can make one for you.
Same thing with nuclear weapons. I can make single missions but not campaigns  ;)

Hi CaptainKoloth,

I'm also a long time IL-2 player who is somewhat new to these forums, but I've also been making missions in B.A.T for a while now for my own amusement including a campaign that might  scratch your cold war goes hot itch. It's from the perspective of a Canadian fighter pilot flying sabres in the 1950's in Germany as the cold war spirals into world war 3. Anyways if anyone's interested in playing it i'll do some polishing work and share it here at some point.

Thank you! That's very generous of you!

There's basically two things I've always wanted to do in a flight sim but have never been able to, both in a Cold War nuclear weapons-delivery context:

1) A one-way mission by an F-84, flying in under the radar to toss-bomb a Soviet target like an airfield with a tactical nuclear weapon;
2) A B-47 or B-52 on a penetration mission into the USSR, flying over the pole and  then under the radar to deliver nuclear ordnance (or a Tu-4 or -95 going the other way!)

I dont know what exactly is within the capabilities of the engine or what maps exist, but these are the two missions I'm dying to fly!

And I guess a B-29 Silverplate with an atomic bomb over either Hiroshima or Berlin would be an interesting mission as well  ;D

I enjoy making missions so no problem  8).
I don't want to make a full-on campaign because i already have a big patch on my project in WIP and lately i have limited free time.
Both concepts can surely be done, especially the F-84 one (the B-52/47 is also 100% doable but i must find the right map first XD)

For the B-29 Silverplate i already did it some time ago. The bombing of Nagasaki.
I can share this one right away with you; it has minimal briefing and flight time since i built it to just aim and drop the A-Bomb on the city, but for the other 2 i need 3/4 days to build them (with standard Wings over 'Nam quality if someone knows what i'm talking about).

Let me know any details you might want to add  ;)

Thanks man- you're the best! I'd love to try the Nagasaki mission!

For the other two, just some ideas I'll throw out there but feel free to modify any as appropriate to make the mission feasible, I'm just letting my imagination run here:

For the F-84 mission I was imagining something where you'd take off with drop tanks, go the very limit of the aircraft's range and toss-bomb an airfield with a tactical nuclear weapon. You'd have just enough fuel to turn around and make it some portion of the way back where you'd ditch and hope for the best. So maybe you're taking off from an airfield in West Germany, navigating a gauntlet of SAM and MiG-15s and 17s on the way back, and you'd have just enough fuel to turn around after dropping the bomb and get maybe 100 miles or so away from the area you just hit before ejecting (this is actually pretty much what the mission plan was as I understand it!- interesting reference dealing with this one-way attack profile with Super Sabres here) This mission probably happens in about 1953.

On the B-47/52 mission I was thinking more like Fail-Safe; you'd come in low, at night, from the north, toward a Soviet city like Leningrad and try to make your way through the thicket of SA-5s, SA-2s, MiG-21s etc. to make it through to the target. I'm thinking this one takes place around 1965. I don't know if IL-2 has either nuclear SAMs or some of the giant PVO Stranyy interceptors like the Su-15 or Tu-128, but those would have been some real-life hazards pilots of such a mission would have faced.

But do whatever works, im sure whatever you come up with will be fantastic!

Thank you! I just enjoy making missions so it's normal to me ;)

Alright i've got everything you want written down and i'll do my best to accomplish your requests. The problems that i have in mind now are the choice of the correct map, map size and AI behavior, but most of the things are totally doable. I'll keep you updated.  :)

I'll send you the Nagasaki one between tomorrow and past tomorrow (if anyone else wants it let me know). Recently i have limited free time as i said, and i'm afraid it will be like this for the next 2 weeks. I'll work on them but it will take longer than usual.
As soon as i get a bit more "freedom" i'll retake the same pace as before.
