Spitfire Vb vs Bf 109F-2

Hi all,

This post is for fans of VP's Modpack, inspired by VP's latest beautiful Spitfire skins (thanks VP!).  I've long found the Spits frustrating to dogfight with, due to the simulated Merlin engine's severe negative-G carburetor misfire, which I personally feel is over-simulated in IL-2 1946.  So I decided to check it out, and found that a satisfying (to me) fix was surprisingly simple.  I share it here for other players who would like a less frustrating dog-fighting experience with their own Spitfires.

To install: just drop the folder 'KB Merlin Engine Carburetor Mod' into your #SAS folder.  To restore your normal VP Modpack Spitfire flight models just delete the mod or remark it out with a minus symbol (-) in front of the folder name (i.e. rename folder to "-KB Merlin Engine Carburetor Mod").

The download is a modified 'buttons' (or flight model) file, which (only) changes all earlier Merlin carburetors to the 'Shilling Orifice' or 'R.A.E. Restrictor' type as they were officially known, which has a slight negative-G misfire, but won't cause a drastic loss of engine power while you're attempting to draw a bead on your next Messerschmitt victory.

In the real world, 'Shilling Orifice' carburetors were retro-fitted to RAF fighters during 1941. In IL-2 1946, the simulated Restrictor-type carburetor became available from game version 4.10 (so this mod won't work for 4.09 sorry).  This mod therefore isn't historic, but it will make your early- to mid-war Spitfires much nicer to dogfight (and closer in 'feel' in my opinion to the many RAF memoirs I have read).  Another pro tip is to turn off realistic gunnery in your difficulty settings if you feel the Spitfire Ia and IIa .303 rifle-calibre ammunition is under-simulated in IL-2 1946: you'll be able to set a 109 Emil on fire with a short burst, or bring down a bomber with a long burst, again more in accordance with the memoirs of actual aces like 'Al' Deere and 'Cobber' Kain, IMO. Just remember to turn realistic gunnery back on when you transfer out of your Spitfire or Hurricane squadron!

Download the mod here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/u68uo805irx15gv/KB%20Merlin%20Engine%20Carburetor%20Mod.zip

Pro Tip II is to use the '#SAS_Gore For All Planes by Wolfighter' JSGME optional mod from here (fully compatible with VP Modpack): https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,37662.msg416714.html#msg416714

Try it, keep it if you like it.

Happy Dogfighting!  :)

Thanks mate, I'm gonna give your mod a try. But I noticed that my current 'buttons' file is 2Mb, meanwhile the one in your mod is 10Mb. Where's that extra 8Mb of data coming from? :)

I was watching this video recently, where Sir Douglas Bader explains the manuever they did to avoid the carburetor cuttig out:

Hi VP,

The latest version of NTRKWizard - the flight model editor - recompiles FMD and EMD files using all three(?) IL-2 1946 encryption formats (4.09, 4.101, and HSFX I think).  It creates three versions of each FMD and EMD, hence the larger file size of buttons - but buttons can then be used in virtually all game versions. There is an option to compile in specific encryptions, but I hope if people enjoy the mod they can pass it round their friends. I really like what it does for the early Spits - some later ones already have it of course, or have a pressure carburetor (Merlin 66 on) or injection carburetor (Merlin 100 on).

The mod won't work in 4.09 though, because the Shilling Orifice classfiles were new for 4.10 (selecting carburetor 4 in the EMD causes loss of throttle in 4.09 I believe).

Cheers  :)

Kiwibiggles, many thanks for your work. Now if you could fix the bouncy landings on almost all aircraft I would be a happy man.

Recently, I've added jets mods and I played fights in QMB. I noticed one thing.  In air fighting, the enemy jets don't try to fight back. In fighting in prop aircraft vs prop, they fight back ,shooting me. Does anyone know why?

So I discovered last night that there's now a 1.13.x update to the game from Diadalos.
Is the VP mod compatible with it? (I'll just try it and see, of course)
If not, are there plans to make it such?
GREAT mod BTW!! Thanks!! :D

Another question: I notice that some DGen campaigns I can DL require Asura's DGen. Is that part of this VP Modpack and/or SAS Selector?
Thanks.

I need a complete conf file to duplicate as my briefing screen is unreadable with red print. v I thought I had it fixed but I guess not,  All Mods entries have been added but no joy.  Brian
