Been away a while
« on: September 01, 2020, 02:39:27 AM »

Hi all,

Been away from IL2 for a long time courtesy parenthood, busy job and all life's other distractions, although have always managed the odd dabble once every couple of months to remind myself I haven't lost the ability to flip a tail dragger even on taxi out!  o_O

Hopefully will be back a lot more in the future as I'm shortly about to retire, but one of the things I have found time to do is to get right back into plastic, with a loft full of kitboxes. So after a couple of practise goes, I set myself the challenge of rigging up a biplane - and chose the Tiger Moth from Airfix's excellent new 1/48th offering. I'd been lucky enough to fly one of these beautiful old kites nearly 20y ago, so have recreated the exact machine I flew, which 60 years earlier again, had been a fighter trainer in WW2, and had been restored to period RAF markings when I flew here - total heaven.

Anyway, here's my attempt to recreate her.

Btw - excellent work from all who've posted pics here - am aspiring to some of your high standards before my aged eyes kick it into touch altogether!  :(
Couldn't resist the sepia tone one of my little diorama at the end - came out better than i thought it would!

Salut all  :)

Great work. I've been lucky to take a flight in one of the old girls too. Incredible! Your modelling is excellent.

Thanks DarkBlue,

They are lovely planes to fly aren't they! Have enjoyed tooling around in one in IL2 the last few times I've played. Works well as a trainer there too  :)

That is excellent, rigging biplanes can be a real chore.
The bottom picture is really good too.
Where did you get a WAAF figure?

Hi Forager

Sorry for the late reply - haven't quite retired yet - end of the month!

The WAAF figure comes from the Revell 1/48 RAF Pilots and Ground crew (who also do the dog ;)). I think ICM also do the same set - not sure who did it first.... She's a lovely little figure - pun intended! Here's a better picture of her.

I've got a few female figures in 1/48th but they're hard to come by. There's a couple of WAAF mechanics in resin, and also a french resistance fighter - both by Brengun IIRC - she's going in an SOE Lysander display that I'm planning at some point. I'm hoping to turn one of the mechanics into an army nurse for a crashed desert hurricane recovery diorama too. those two should keep me busy over the long dark winter months!
