AI's awareness
« on: September 09, 2020, 01:00:22 AM »

I've been analyzing the AI's behavior and came into conclusion that, unlike the real pilots, they can't be surprised. Of the many hundreds of my attacks only a handful ended with me becoming noticed at a few hundred meters, and I never really opened fire (I usually start shooting at 200-300 meters max) before they saw me, even if I were behind and below. This is why I have to ask: is it just me and perhaps my poor tactics, or have any of you succeeded in totally surprising the enemy more than once?

Which planes (attacker / defender) did you use?

I usually fly the 109, and the enemies were very diverse, from I-15s, P.11s and MS 406s to Spitfires, Yaks and Tomahawks.

Alright so if this also happens when only stock planes are involved, then I'm lost a bit.
BAT's AI is supposed to take the visibility from pilot perspective into account, so if you approach a lone plane from low six, he should not see you.
Strange thing...
We've had the same issue in Ultrapack in the past, when AI logic was still based on 4.10 code, but we got rid of that by backporting latest "official" AI stuff.

Well, maybe vampire_pilot can shed more light on this.

From my experience this seems to be linked to the experience level of your enemy...
If you only fight veterans or aces, you won't surprise them often and you have to be prepared for them to be expert shots that only need short windows of opportunity to kill or disable you....
Normal and rookie pilots on the other hand are not as vigilant...
4.12 is very good IMHO in this regard...

Well there were some cases when I approached a lone Hurricane from behind and below, so that the pilot couldn't see me in the mirror, and when I reached 300-400 meter distance it suddenly made a sharp left (always left) turn. It frustrated me because I knew there would be no way a real pilot could notice me in that situation. I never really managed to open fire before I was noticed.
