High above the Khalkin-Gol 1939
« on: September 26, 2020, 11:24:10 AM »

With the help of Edc1 I have moved another one of my old campaigns to BAT:

This is a semi-historical, 14-mission campaign, set in the period of June and July 1939, when the border conflict in the Far East between Japan and the USSR escalated into full war. You are Soviet Fighter Pilot in 22 IAP, based on the air-strip at Buir, and flying the gun equipped I-16 type 24. Most action is based on actual missions. The outline of the campaign, basic facts, dates etc, also all follow history.

The Battles of Khalkhin Gol were the decisive engagements of the undeclared Soviet–Japanese border conflicts fought among the Soviet Union, Mongolia, Japan and Manchukuo in 1939. The conflict was named after the river Khalkhin Gol, which passes through the battlefield. In 1939, the Japanese Cabinet sent instructions to the Kwantung Army to strengthen and fortify Manchukuo's borders with Mongolia and the Soviet Union. Additionally, the Kwantung Army, which had long been stationed in Manchuria far from the Japanese Home Islands, had become largely autonomous and tended to act without approval from, or even against the direction of, the Japanese government. What started as a skirmishes in May escalated to large scale battles in June and July. The fighting resulted in the defeat of the Japanese Sixth Army.

The battle played an important part in subsequent Japanese conduct in World War II. This defeat combined with the Chinese resistance in the Second Sino-Japanese War, together with the signing of the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact, moved the Imperial General Staff in Tokyo away from the policy of the "North Strike Group" favored by the Army (which wanted to seize Siberia for its resources as far as Lake Baikal) towards the so called "South Strike Group", favored by the Navy. The road to Pearl Harbour had been opened.
