  • Fortress Formosa

About a month ago or so I found an excellent reference to Japanese airfields on Formosa during W W 2 or known as Fortress Formosa.
I had just a basic map of Formosa and Chinese coast and mainland area of China,
This map was quite old but a good starting point.

I dont like to be in 1 place at 1 time I like a bit of variety at least 2 places at 1 time
Just like how I build model kits too. I always have 2 kits going at once for variety

I also miss flying my favourite Japanese planes (hence working on a map from the 60s as well)  8)

Focusing on Fortress Formosa for now then sourcing China info will be interesting
My wife reads Chinese so she could be of good use ha ha  ;D

This is the excellent main page I have discovered

https://ww2db.com/country/Taiwan

You'll see the airfield/sea bases further down.

This is what I have done so far

Matsuyama Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Matsuyama_Airfield/

My river is a tad off but put that in first Mostly looking at the airfield.
The Japanese had aircraft bunkers and lots of fortificattions on Formosa

Giran Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Giran_Airfield/

Okayama Aircraft Factory
This was a huge multi strip aircraft factoryand repair area I included a civilian, IJN and IJA repair area also aircraft factory too  :D
https://ww2db.com/facility/Okayama_Aircraft_Factory/

Takao Seaplane Base
https://ww2db.com/facility/Takao_Seaplane_Base/

Tamsui Seaplane Base
Still working on this one from photo
https://ww2db.com/facility/Tamsui_Seaplane_Base/

Have got 13 more airfields to go

On a foot note here I know this can be a touchy subject but I am all for the history only  ;D

Definitely finished mid year next year  ;D

But an excellent info source just need something like this for China  ;D

Also Mr. C Texan's textures from his Hengyang map look really cool.  ;D

At least I can travel around map making  8)

They take a looooooonnggg time to do  ;D
A lot of people probably realize this  :D

Would also be looking forward to Chinese Civil War map as well but you need the W W 2 map first then you can have Japanese planes fighting each other

Like These

There are many more Ki-61, Ki-51, Ki-45 etc.

Hi farang65,

In case you haven't seen them, here's a link to Formosa city maps (1944-45) for reference,  :)

Old Japanese names for places in Formosa are hard to find (except immediate vicinity of military bases), as they have reverted to Chinese post-1945. If needed, I can translate them from Chinese to Japanese (just a slight alteration in pronunciation in most cases).
Can't wait to test my CACW (Chinese American Composite Wing) P-51 Mustang on it.

I'm in the process of making my own Formosa maps: WWII southern "Formosa" and Cold War northern "Taiwan" (as native Chinese would call it).

Thaks Glibble for bringing these up.  Once upon a time I looked at these map and imagined updating the old Formosa map as Kirby is going here.  These are great.

Kirby - there is another reference site that overlay the WW2 map from the site referenced by Glibble above with modern day satellite maps here: https://imrehg.github.io/taiwanmap/

Glad that you are updating this, knowing your high quality standard.

This map can be used to cover US Navy raids on Formosa in October 1944 (link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formosa_Air_Battle) and US Air Force attack as well (with some 'creative' airfield locations) (link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Taipei).

Thanks for all the kind words and extra info too  ;D

Yes, Texas Uni maps are really good

I have relative history with my family concerning the Chinese Civil War.

My wife is Chinese but born in Thailand.

Her father was KMT then around 1949 up to possibly 51 as my wife said it was very dangerous for him to live in China at the time.
Eventually he was at the border of China and Laos
He got out of China and became a mercenery soldier for the French in Vietnam.
As my wife says he got paid.
Meanwhile Thailand had set up around 5 very large villages for KMT and Chinese refugees un the north near the Mekong River.
She said Taiwan supported the towns for some time education, clothing, food, housing etc.
He eventually made his way from Vietnam to Thailand and was able to settle in one of these large villages
The towns are located away or far and in betweeb Thai towns basically self contained villages.

I have been to her village many times all writing is in Chinese. It looks like missionaries were there as there is a small church.
It just looks out of place.

So my wife's father fighting for democracy in China then as a mercenery in Vietnam finally settling in Thailand.

He has passed away now some years ago.

@milvipes

Keep working on your Cold War maps The Strait Crises are really interesting as well.  :D
I could  take this map up to 1949

Re: Fortress Formosa and China Coast W.W. 2 Some More Airfields Formosa
« Reply #8 on: September 30, 2020, 06:01:37 AM »

Here are a few more airfields in Formosa this week

Heito Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Heito_Airfield/

Hokuto Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Hokuto_Airfield/

Koshun Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Koshun_Airfield/

Possibly a few more airfields this coming week.
Taking a break from around the 7th as I am moving into and settling into a new home.  ;D

Back at it after a couple of weeks R and R

@ Master campaign builder Poltava

Sure thing has always been an interesting area regarding history  :D

I also loaded this map up in BAT WAW

BAT really hates Pac Ground runway plates.

All the PAC Gr runway plates you see turn to grass strips and grass strips have little tufts of grass on the sides of the runway and definitely looks different. Quite surprised since Pacific Ground is W W 2 and not Cold War
Can understand for sure with other map Laos etc.  :D

 2 funky airfields in Formosa.

The first one actually has a moat around the airfield if you read the description on the page very cool great defense idea too it als had flak towers  :D

Shoka Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Shoka_Airfield/

The next airfield is interesting because it had concrete runways and taxi ways but was not used after the war kind of a waste really

Soton Airfield
https://ww2db.com/facility/Soton_Airfield

Where I am at with airfields in Formosa still quite a lot more to do  ;D

Going back to the other project just this week populating, wooding out and riverbanks.
Moving into new house after this coming week
Back on track in a few weeks.  ;)

It's nice to see this map getting the attention it needs.  Great work on the airfields!  Making airfields can be fun - I like doin it :)
btw, the textures I used on the Hengyang map were borrowed from other map-makers.  I just tweaked them a little by changing the colors.  The "airfield" texture was mostly my creation.  it probably should be a little darker.

When populating cities with objects, I'd suggest not making it too heavy, as I did with Hengyang.
It will be interesting to see how mainland China will look.  I know you'll do a great job with it all.  Keep at it! ;)
