Admirable work on the 1/48 Spitfire Andy. Granted my little model doesn't touch this in terms of details but I just make them for fun! I'd like to see the paintjob you have in store for her. :)

Oh, yes - it's all about fun.  :)

Going to be a straight from the box finish, limited choice with the MkXII as only two squadrons used it. Interesting back stories with both pilots on offer from the decal sheet - top-scoring Welsh ace of WWII, or Aussie recipient of a Soviet medal. I'm going Welsh (there are slight differences to models catered for in the box).

It's a nice kit to put together, which went some way in restoring my faith in building after an expletive-strewn battle of wills with the Revell Seafire and its' issues...

G'day Andy

Who was the Australian pilot?

I would like to read up on him and perhaps do a mission.

What ho, old chum!  :)

Donald Smith DFC - I'm afraid the Soviet Medal of Valour business might have been a bit of a red herring, although he did have quite a career.

Nice bio' here - would make an interesting campaign or single missions.

More 41 Squadron info' here. Basically an informative plug for two huge volumes chronicling 41 Squadron in WWII (click on the book covers for details/reviews)...again, interesting campaign/mission possibilites.

The only other member of the RAAF to receive a Soviet award was AUS405595 F/Lt John Hugh Dixon RAAF DFC (His Soviet Medal for Distinguished Battle Service awarded at the same time as Smith's decoration - although Dixon actually flew over Russia).

Thanks Andy

Really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.
I was aware of RAAF pilots flying in Russian squadrons but was more interested in Pacific and African operations in the past.
It might give me a chance to fly my first Eastern Front mission.

So there we were, toodling along, minding our own business, when control tells us that some fast moving bogies are in the area and we should see them off...

Hmmm, we'd heard about these fellows. Pretty fast, sure, but nothing we couldn't keep up with, and they didn't seem to have any armament - which was fine with me.

Well, we soon polished three of them off...

Ginger and I decided that there might be some leave in Paris for us if we brought the last one back to base for the boffins to clamber over - so that's just what we did.

You remember it, I'm sure - the photo was in all the papers and turns up in specialist books to this day... ;)

Hello Andy,

I'm sorry to write to you: Too much blue!

And I'm color blind.

The screenshots are wonderful.

Best regards,

Thanks for feedback and kind words, Gerhard. Much appreciated.  :)

Funny thing, I stole a few minutes on the computers at work a few nights ago - screenies looked totally different than they do here. Much brighter and different saturation levels than I get here at home.
