The silly shape of things to come....

On October 4th, 1937, Heinkel test pilot Gustav Andermann took off in a He-112 test bed, dubbed "Lufthaken", for a secret rendezvous....

"Inspired by the appearance of the Akron at the Olympics, the Luftwaffe decided to conduct it's own LTA experiment"

I guess the only question then is how this might be used by the Germans, as it seems a bit outside of usual doctrine. Perhaps it'd fill a similar role to the coastal patrol craft like the Condor or the Bv-138. This then begs the question as to how it might fare in WWII proper, I could see it having some sort of an initial impact spotting convoys for U-boats, or being deployed to act in some sort of hunter-killer task force with the Bismark or a related surface ship force, and then being hunted down by the RN like the IRL Bismark. Sadly don't see it surviving the war, not with Sunderlands, Hurricats, and CVEs around.

Could make for a cool campaign/mission set for sure!

This could actually cause some changes to a ZRS/ZRCV campaign project I'm putting together...

Honestly, the 112 was an afterthought as "something with guns". The main idea was to have the Ar-66 do postal and liaison duty (and looks like the plane they used in Indiana Jones ;) ). The Hindenburg has no hangar, so the plane has to remain outside. I needed a plane with a sliding canopy, so the pilot can get in and out easy and climb a ladder into the ship. Hence the 112, and not a 109 for example.

Marvellous !

I wonder if the pilotless Camel that was launched off the R33 constituted the first Cruise Missile ?   8)

Pity the poor sod who had to spin her up for a start in mid flight  :)) :)) :)) :)) :)) :)) :)) :))

Cheers
