Map of Vosges incomplete
« on: February 03, 2021, 07:26:00 PM »

a while ago, I mentioned here that I'd started a map of the Vosges region - but I was abandoning it, because someone else was doing all of France[!!]  I also gave up because the complex river system was too much for me. I have no patience with rivers!
[I'll stick to arid regions or oceans in future]
Anyway, Kopfdorfer read my post, and asked if I could upload my incomplete map anyway.
So, here it is... at
https://www.mediafire.com/file/0hlj61yoqs4wn3m/fatty_finn_Vosges_1914.7z/file

warning: this is very incomplete. Recommended for map builders only!
you can fly on it - but it doesnt look good.
Also, my apologies: the download is bigger than it should be. I made many experimental texture files - and they are all included here, in a separate folder.
not all have been tried - and not all are worth trying!  None of these are hi-res, and none are winter textures.
For winter, no doubt there are some terrific ready-made textures elsewhere.
Download Also includes some other developmental stuff.
Good luck!

I looked at your raw map_c. Your rivers looked fine. You don't have to put in every last little stream or rivulet.

Do you have any screenshots?

1. copy the folder "fatty_finn_Vosges_1914" into your  MODS/MAPMODS/MAPS/ folder, rename it, say, "Vosges"

2. add to your file all.ini the line:
"Vosges Vosges/load.ini "

3. in your _Tex folder, create subfolders
GBP/summer/ and copy there the content of the folder
"fatty_finn Vosges summer textures "

Hi Mandrill
yeah - I got the rivers on there, at least.  But try flying along them:  the water surface is nowhere near flat!
Getting them to fit snugly into the bottoms of the valleys was too much for me.  [though the Rhine was easier , of course]

I should add - in regard to textures
there's a section of the map around AE/15 where a whole set of test-textures are displayed.
some screenshots from there are below

There are shortcuts. Make an extra rawmap_c at 25% scale. Layer it on top of an extra map_h at whatever % opacity you prefer to work at. Draw the rivers along what are clearly the river valleys in the underlying map_h.

Increase opacity to 100% and merge layers and increase x 400%. You now have an early stage rawmap_c with the rivers in the correct place. (You need to do a lot of work shaping and blurring the rivers still, of course).

Once the rivers are done, make a new extra rawmap_c and reduce to 25%. Layer the map_h on top of the 1/4 scale rawmap_c. You can now draw over the course of the rivers in 000 pure black and blur it into the surrounding landscape along the edges.

Increase opacity to 100% and merge. You now have a map_h with the river courses perfectly flat and a raw map_c that perfectly fits the river valleys.

Quite a bit of work needed there.

The tiles should be colour-modified, so that they are on the same position on the green/blue/red spectrum and work together. Some are clearly brighter than others and the tiles need to be brightness-modified, so that they are the same level of brightness. They need to be made into continuous tile-able pieces that match up.

There appears to be a map_F issue in the distance???

Some Google Earth shots are less closely focussed that others and this makes for inconsistency as well.
