Landing Carrier Versions of the Fw 190A and F
« on: March 22, 2021, 08:13:33 PM »

Has anyone worked out a successful method for landing carrier versions of the Fw 109A and F? The tailhook catches the wire but the aircraft keeps nosing over. Strangely, this does not happen so easily with the long-nosed Dora. Latest failed attempts are with full flaps and 190-180 kph touchdown speed.

EDIT: First successful landing in the A-4T. Flaps at takeoff setting, not full. That might be the answer.

Maybe the COG shift forward with fully deployed flaps in these 190 FMs is strong.
That would result in a theoretical nose heaviness while sitting on the ground.-
What on land in IL-2 is okay and appears as "neutral" becomes a trap on a carrier, because the plane likes to nose over, once the tail is off the ground.

Maybe a method is to actually kill all flaps once over the deck. That removes at least the flap-dependent COG shift (if it is as suspected).  Might be enough to make the tail sit.

I'll give it a try. Thanks!

After much trial and error, I've worked out a landing speed of 160 kph to keep the heavy 190F-9T from nosing over. Managed this in clean condition with full flaps and a 30% fuel load. It's a start.
