Carrier Takeoff - taxi into takeoff position
« on: April 02, 2021, 01:21:56 PM »

Hi,

Sorry for the noob questions, just comparing BAT to original 4.14.1.

In BAT WAW planes start 4 abreast on the carrier deck. How do you taxi into the takeoff position like the A.I. does. It's kind of hard to move around in tight spaces without toe brakes  and you figure the ground crew would put the plane into takeoff position.

I'm new to BAT myself but assume the same rules as previous versions still apply...

If you're not using a catapult then there is no taxiing, you simply wait for your turn once any aircraft in front of you are off then you take off.
If you're using a catapult then you need to taxi close to the catapult start point and apply chocks.  This will place you in the takeoff position.  Rev the engine up then release chocks.

in all honesty, in Il-2 friction and especially sideways friction is simply not modelled in detail. Therefore there is no way to move around a rolling deck in any "realistic fashion". That and the nonexistent ground crew. That being said...

This can be done quite easily:

After spawn, switch on engine and then simply hit "A"utopilot, and wait until you are transferred into the catapult when it's your turn  :)
The wings will start to unfold.
Simply deactivate autopilot, take control, go through take off routine and when ready, release chocks...

LOL

All this time on IL2 and I never knew you can autopilot to the catapult!

I've always taxied manually, and went to far a few times.

Sorry, I forgot about the autopilot aspect.  Some players prefer manual.
Vampire_pilot's point about friction (or lack of same) is a good one.  A drastic example of that is when a carrier turns and you don't have chocks in (i.e. you've just landed and are taxiing forward).  Unless you have chocks in when the ship turns you are going swimming.
