The campaign may work with other IL-2 Installs but we have only tested with the BAT WAW module.
Historical Background by LarsAfter the Armistice when the Italian armed forces surrendered to the Allies in September 1943 the nation became split between joining the Allies to speed the end of the war and continuing with the Germans to defend their Italian homeland and families from the constant Allied bombardment.
Equally despised and adored by the local population the airmen fought a constantly outnumbered, outgunned and unloved campaign. The German High Command wanted them to integrate into the Luftwaffe for better control, and the Allies wanted their expertise to join them to help speed up the end to hostilities. Neither option appealed to the men of the ANR as all they wanted to do was defend their homes and families. With increasing pressure on the Luftwaffe to defend their own homeland, it was belatedly recognised that the Italian units were needed to defend the southern front. Although German fighters were claimed by Allied gunners and pilots during the last six months of the war, these were virtually all Italian-flown fighters.

Between January 1944 and April 1945 the two fighter units claimed 240 planes shot down with another 115 unconfirmed in 52 air combats, losing 14 pilots killed in action out of 50 front-line combatants. Post-war research has confirmed around 60 of the kills so far. Like all air forces over-claiming was a natural part of air combat during the confusion and excitement.
Nearly all the missions were fought against the US 12th and 15th Air Forces, with their mass bomber formations and large fighter escorts. Later they fought the medium bombers and fighter-bombers, again against superior numbers. (Due to programme issues Von and I had to tone down the numbers for the sake of those with older computers).
You will be flying the MC205V, G55, and Bf109G/K. This is a semi-historical campaign which those who like to rack up the kills should enjoy, and we hope those who like variety will also enjoy.
I recommend the book ‘Mussolini’s Hawks’ by Marco Mattioli for further reading on this subject.
Installation1. Decompress the zipped HawksOverItaly.zip file to a temporary directory.
2. Copy the decompressed Missions folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
3. Open the campaign as a Italian Pilot (“Regia Aeronautica”). Though not required, we recommend that you uncheck “No Instant Success” in your difficulty settings.
