A heads-up on my Green_Hell map with forest cover added
« on: May 08, 2021, 01:55:42 AM »

It feels like sacrilege to alter the excellent Green_Hell map. But I just can't help myself!  ;)

I started this project not terribly long after installing this map. I like the 'layer cake' forests on maps, and I wanted that to be the case here. And I figured I could also achieve the aim of re-texturing certain rivers having vast gravel/silt coverage.

And so I essentially replaced the map_t RGB values for the three most solidly forested textures with the value for forest cover. This freed up two texture slots, which I used to make new river bed textures for such alluvial outflow rivers as the Markham, shown here. One texture is bare gravel/silt, while the other has partial vegetation so as to achieve better blending into the rest of the vegetation.

This is the first iteration of Green_Hell (for 1942-ish), not the second (for 1943-ish).

I have some cleanup remaining to do, which takes FAR longer than doing this simple RGB reassignment. Along shorelines in particular there resulted a peppering of the new riverbed texture bits. And there's LOTS of shoreline to comb on this map!

It is not sacrilege, it is a good thing you're doing! ]cheers[
Flying low over forest-like textures is immersion killer. Il2 forest is itself an ugly thing but it is still better than 'painted woods'.

This is excellent WxTech

I'm wondering if the guys are still working on this map?
I was planning on asking for an update next month.
Last year I was lucky enough to get a pre-release preview but the map was then not released.
They did mention they were fixing the airfields.
It's an awesome map which still can be improved.

An update was issued, in which the area was extended a bit farther north. And more rivers were added, keeping their correct elevations. Moreover, some airfields were also expanded to reflect their state in 1943. I think it was intended to replace the first version (better for 1942), because the airfield textures kept the same names.

I treat this as two maps, giving priority to the first (1942) by retaining those older airfield textures. The newer textures have been retained, to be "brought out of mothballs" if and when I get round to altering their names and incorporating them in the later map to be appropriately tweaked. Then I would have the two maps ready to use at all times. Currently, I'd have to swap the field textures out before using the newer Green Hell version.

By the way, before the second version was released, I had already added more rivers to the first. Indeed, it probably was my comments about such that inspired the lads to do so for their update.  ;)

G'day Mate

Myself and DHumphrey were privately given an updated and final version June last year, at the time Yann asked me not to say anything as they were intending to release it in a week or 2.
But as you can see it never was released, Jan 2020 in the first post is the last update.

Like you my preference is 1942 but this is by far a more difficult map to make.
You have to read pilot accounts and diaries such as Sakai's observations of Lae and build a mental picture because there just isn't the same amount of visual material.
